SCU Recognition

Does Santa Clara have much recognition other than the bay area, if you are an undergraduate of business? nationally? Along the west coast? statewide?

SCU is well known all around California, plus Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, etc. from what I’m told

While SCU has enormous recognition in the Bay Area / Silicon Valley, it is well know throughout California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, etc as is stated before. Specifically the SCU Leavey School of Business is the most well known school at the University and is ranked as one of the top Business Schools in the Nation for both Undergraduate Business and Graduate Business. The SCU Leavey School of Business is comparable to the University of Southern California (USC) Marshall School of Business and is ranked 3rd in California for Business.

I’m from PA and people know this school, unlike LMU and a lot of the others that I applied to.

do any of u know anything about Puget Sounds Business program for undergrads? My son has been accepted to both SCU and PSU as an incoming freshman and is trying to figure out which one to go to

I don’t hear too much about Puget Sounds business program and plus SCU’s undergrad business program has been ranked in the Top 30 of the nation I believe according to Business Newsweek

thanks JaceFromLA…just gotta convince him now

Previous posters here are indeed correct, if I am not mistaken, SCU was one spot behind USC for Undergrad Business. Definitely something to be said for that.

My sense of SCU having watched it for the past 5 years or so is that they have an aggressive plan to put SCU on the national map.

Buildings: Their capital campaign was huge and they recently finished a round of new buildings–Arts & Science, Levy Business School, and Library are all just a few years old now and state of the art. I believe the sports center is also new. This year they gutted and refurbished Donahue Alumni House. A new dorm is going up next year. I believe it will increase on campus spots by about 400 students if I am recalling correctly. Basically, 1/2 the campus is now new buildings so the campus has a very up-to-date posh feel to match the posh tuition charges :)

Rankings: Law School is tops for patent/intellectual property law. Business School somewhere in the top 30 nationally. Both of these schools will continue to trend upwards as I believe this is in part how the school has decided to brand itself nationally.

Sustainability: This is another huge branding – sustainability courses are integrated throughout the campus. High tech classes dealing with sustainability will continue to increase. Campus buildings/grounds are currently “Silver” rating by some organization, SCU plans to go for a “Gold” rating next.

In summary, SCU seems to be very driven by a long term yet aggressive plan to be seen as more than just a regional college.

You’re exactly right, annika. They’re doing some serious work on the campus and the new student populations as well. It’s also worth mentioning that there is going to be a new admissions building, I believe – look out for that on the not-too-distant horizon (2013 maybe?), so there are no signs of slowing down. As long term investments go, I think it’s hard to go wrong with a degree from SCU.

Yes, they just started work on the admissions building. There has been utility work being done (underground conduits) starting this week related to it. The new admissions building is scheduled to be finished June 2012 according to the website. It looks like it will be really gorgeous.
SCU is a pretty regional school, meaning that it’s not well recognized in areas other than the West coast and doesn’t have a place on national rankings. That is not to say it’s not a good school. It provides a a solid education and as another poster said they are working on becoming more nationally recognized. It will be interesting to see where they are in 10 years.
