I just got accepted to UCSD for the Winter of 2006. Does anyone know what this means? If there's anyway I can get in for Fall? How does this work?

hi i'm in the same situation as you are. it means you start UCSD in january...9 i believe. i don't think there's any way you can get in for fall =/ basically we start later than everyone else. it's probably worth it in the long run though. i think in the meantime before you start the winter quarter you can take some community college classes or something...i'm still looking into that. click "read on" on the UCSD application status site and read the FAQ for more info =)

also, on freshman admit day on april 9, 2005...
Winter 2006 Admit Sessions -- 10:30 am/ 12:00 pm

( got this from http://warren.ucsd.edu/prospect/FreshmanAdmitDayAgenda.html )

oh yeah and CONGRATS!!

yeah, i understood what it meant, i just don't get why, you know? I also heard that housing isn't guaranteed for winter acceptees. there's so much to think about now. i figured it would be easier once i knew, but now its just more confusing :)

thanks. congrats to you too!!

No one else has any insight on this?

My friend was not accepted into UCSD, but is there any way he can be accepted to UCSD for winter quarter?

from the other thread...

Can I reapply for the Winter Quarter?

UCSD only accepts students from the Fall Quarter applicant pool each year. If there are more admitted freshmen then there are places in the Fall freshman class, a number of students who applied for the Fall Quarter are offered admissions for the Winter Quarter. However, UCSD does not have a separate application period for the Winter Quarter.

that's from the ucsd site. believe me, if there was some way to get into ucsd somehow, i would know. lol

One of my friends got accepted into UCSD to the winter quarter last year. He took one semester a community college and then went off to UCSD when the winter semester started.

If you got into winter quarter that means you didn't fit the requirement to be in fall quarter because the fall quarter acceptees were smarter or something. i don't know, but my friend got in winter quarter too.

i didnt get in at all that must mean that im retarded.

aww hey UCI_Hopefull, come on that's not true at all!!

hey guys, i got into ucsd for the winter '05 and i thought i'd tell you guys a few things. first of all, being accepted into the winter quarter isn't too bad. it just means that you start school @ ucsd in january. in the meantime it'd be a idea to go to community college for the first semester so you dont fall behind on units. unfortunately, being a winter admit means that housing is not guaranteed and most people end up getting apartments near the ucsd campus, and trust me there are alot of them. the experience isnt that bad now that I look back on it and i feel really lucky i got into ucsd as a winter admit than be rejected. good luck to those who got in as a winter admit, you'll enjoy it in sd. if any of you hav questions about being a winter admit just ask, i'll try my best to answer those burning questions you may have.

Chipsahuy - How is housing off campus - price - convienence - advantages-disadvantages - at what point do most students lose campus housing? Please and thanks.

i'm in the same situation you are

i called them and asked about the situation but they told me that the decisions for winter quarter acceptance are final and there is pretty much nothing you can do to switch. Oh well, i'll just use this time to save up some money for college or taking some courses at a CC... i'm not sure yet i'll decide later

in any case, don't worry all, this is still a great accomplishment, we just stumbled upon a small bump in the road. don't let it stop you ;)

Mr. B,

La Jolla, CA is quite the expensive zip code. Don't expect to find off campus housing near the university.

chipsahuy - could you get into classes you wanted at ucsd easily when you started winter quarter? in the time before the winter quarter starts, how is taking community college classes compared to taking UC extension classes?

i'm guessing you got off-campus housing. just wondering, did you turn in your housing papers early for winter quarter though?

i know this depends on the person, but how was your experience having to go to ucsd with most people all settled in?

THANKS :)

Mr. B

The la jolla area is a bit pricey, so you should look around different apartments for the best prices. Depending on if you want a single room or will be sharing with another roommate, the price is going to be pretty steep. I am currently rooming with 3 other winter admits, sharing a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment at one of the closer apartments near the ucsd campus. I'm paying $1750 a month not including water, electric, utilities and food. Buying food and other neccesities must come out of our own pockets. We have to do the cleaning, dishes, vacuum etc. because we dont have house cleaning like people in the dorms. But considering the close proximity to the school I think its a decent price. (its the first stop going away from campus on the ucsd shuttle buses but the last stop to campus). Taking the shuttles isn't too bad because there is a bus stop just outside the apartment complex. One of the advantages of taking the shuttles is that you dont need much to get to school like starting your car and stuff like that. The downside however is that sometimes it takes up to 25 minutes for a bus to stop because buses are full and can no longer pick up passengers. i've had up to 4 ucsd buses pass me one time, so i'd be advisable to get a bus sticker from the parking building to have access to city buses for free.

unfortunately most winter admits do not get on-campus housing because dorms are usually already distributed to fall students. However there are a few spaces that open up because of various reasons and are offered to the first few people on the winter housing waitinglist. most people therefore have to get apartments. hoped all that info helped.

for winter '05 admits, a certain number of GE and other required classes (math, chem., writing courses) were specially reserved for us, giving us some of the choices we wanted. but i must advise you that you sign up classes super early, 8:00am on the dot, or which ever time you are allowed to enroll in classes. personally I have never taken UC extension classes, nor do I even know what those are, so I cant really compare the two. I think you get like 4.5 units for a semester of a community college class. you should really get in touch with your academic advisor from your college or refer to assist.org.

to tell you the truth I didnt turn in my housing paper, nor did i sign up for oncampus housing because i kinda knew that I wasnt gonna get on campus. but that should deter you from doing it and hopefully getting a spot if you're the first few people on the housing waitinglist.

I didnt have much trouble making friends and getting comfortable with the school. maybe it was the fact that i'm from the OC and have visited the campus a couple of times b4 actually moving to sd. the overall experience wasnt too bad because i had a few friends that went to ucsd and they showed me around. And keep in mind that you are not the only winter admit, theres about 300 students from muir, warren and revelle that are in your situation, you can even contact people from this board and make friends months b4 the actual contact list becomes available. i believe the more winter '06 admits you talk to, the more comfortable you'll be. you'll make plenty of friends between now and the start of winter '06 from orientation and even this very board. Hope this info was of great assistance to you. IM if you hav any other questions.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. that was extremely helpful!! i appreciate you typing up all of that!

quick question, open to anyone who knows: is orientation for winter admits the same time as regular orientation?

no, for me it was december 3rd so im assuming it should be sometime in early december

I don't know if this will help, but 2 years ago my brother was accepted at Revelle for the winter quarter. Just before he had to make a decision, UCSD contacted him and told him that he would be let in at ERC for the fall quarter. So i guess there's a slight chance your situation could change.
