SDSU 2017 Appeals

Early to hear back from appeals at this in late March but when do you generally hear back from San Diego State after May 1st?

You can hear about your appeal as late as July, so make sure you SIR to another school.

They emailed me on March 21st saying they received my appeal and it will take up to 6 weeks for a decision to be made…is that 6 weeks from March 21st or 6 weeks from May 1st?

I would assume 6 weeks from March 21 if that is the date received. It still puts it after the May 1 SIR date so you will need to accept another school until you hear otherwise.

Awesome. Thank you so much!!

Can you appeal after you’ve been rejected from the waitlist?

@watgirl: You can appeal while you are on the waitlist, but I think once you are rejected off the waitlist, they have reviewed by application as thoroughly as possible so I seriously doubt your appeal would be considered. The appeals that actually are valid usually have to do with a mistake made by SDSU in evaluating your application. Rarely some new and compelling information can help, but if you are appealing because you want to go to SDSU, you have gotten some recent awards or have good grades Senior year, it will it not help.

I have a few questions if anyone can help me out.

I have been denied admissions to SDSU in the major of Sociology and in the letter they said “The number of applicants in your major exceeded the number of allocated enrollment slots.” What kind of reason is this?!
I didn’t quite meet the GPA requirements because I’m still waiting to appeal for course repitition and the grades had to have been enter as they were seen at the time of application deadline, but those bad grades were lowering my overall GPA and they didn’t affect my Major GPA. So that shouldn’t be the reason I was denied, clearly they would have added that right? Also I will be receiving an ADT (Associates Degree for Transfer in Sociology) I know they offer priority to students receiving an ADT but why would I be rejected due to impaction if I should have been given priority. I technically met all requirements if my GPA was the issue they would have mentioned that I didn’t meet all the requirements so what should I do guys? What can I put in my appeal that will strengthen my case against this decision?

I thought I did everything right! I met all the requirements and I have no other schools that I can go to, I live 5 mins away from SDSU with my parents and due to problems with my health I can’t work to support myself (and my family certainly can’t support me) if I go to one of the other campuses they redirected my application to. Plus, I can’t afford to wait and re-apply next year. I’m screwed if I can’t make a solid appeal to overturn this decision now, if anyone can please give me some extra advice before I see some counselors it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

@lii_11 after reading your post I thought to myself your exactly in my same position.
I am a local with an AA-T in sociology, and like you received the same decision from sdsu. I got the same email stating there were not enough allocated spots.
I like you didn’t have a stellar GPA due to young mindedness at the time I entered community college. I received quite a few Cs and a couple Ds which I later retook and got all As. After maturing I turned into a straight A student even taking all honor classs. My GPA is a 3.0 btw- which was the best I could redeem myself without wasting another two years of my life.
I was very disappointed with the news from SDSU because like you said it’s close by etc. I’m happy that I was admitted at Cal state San Marcos though - which is a drive for me but doable.
I am appealing even though many people have said it’s a waste of time. Many people said they only really change their minds with an appeal due to a mistake on their end. I believe you should appeal and write a steallar letter explaining your circumstances. It really can’t hurt and you might get good news! I would contact Cal State San Marcos to see if you can get in there- while it doesn’t have the reputation SDSU has it’s still a beautiful school with smaller class sizes.
If I dont get good news from the appeal, I will reapply for graduate school.
Hope all works out for you

Regarding undergraduate appeals, they let you know 6-8 weeks after May 1st because they need to know how many spots they need to fill. They said that they review the appeals in order so the earlier you sent it, the better.

Thank you for the reply. I just really had sdsu as my only option I know that I shouldn’t have, but that’s just how things turned out. I’m not sure what exactly to put into my appeal to make them reconsider, I’m also taking 2 upper division course this semester with them because I had no other lower division courses to take this semester and I wanted to get ahead. Is San Marcos still accepting? I thought they were only taking local students as of now. And what did you mean by reapplying for graduate school?

@MrGonzo9733 Congrats on CSUSM, I was accepted as well and though SDSU was my first choice I’m excited about San Marcos. The campus has come so far and I too plan on trying for SDSU again for grad school. I was waitlisted for State but my counselor told me you can’t appeal if you’re on the waistlist, does anyone know if this true?

@lii_11 After acquiring your Bachelors, you can apply to SDSU’s Graduate program or any school that offers the degree in your field of choice. I would give San Marcos admissions a call to see if they’re still accepting admissions for the fall. It’s hard to narrow down what to put in the Appeals letter so maybe google or browse this site. Since everything is self reported initially maybe include things that weren’t included in the app, for example if your GPA is maybe lower from a rough start but things have gotten much better. From what I’ve read you need new, compelling info but you just never know. Put your heart in it but keep to the facts as much as possible.

Oh I thought they meant that they were going to apply to graduate school right now without a bachelors which is why I was confused. And for my appeal I am taking a upper division course that was not mentioned in the initial application so I will add that to my appeal so hopefully they see that I am determined to get ahead. Thanks for the advise and as for your appeal I think you should try speaking to another counselor just to be sure. You probably can’t right now but I think you maybe can if they do reject you after reevaluating your application. Hopefully you get a reply soon.

Hello everybody I applied as a general business major with a high GPA but no ADT and was denied so I’m appealing asking for economics as well as using a medical excuse what do you all think? (I already sent it)

That could work because it is a special circumstance that they could consider. I too used my medical excuse and requested a less selective major if that were to help increase my chances of receiving admission.

I was originally accepted as a transfer student but my offer was rescinded because I was missing 1 unit. I added a late start class worth 3 units and I appealed the decision. Has anyone heard of anything like this and what are my chances of winning the appeal?

Just checked my portal today and I was admitted three days ago off of my appeal! So shocked I heard back before May 1st!!!

Congratulations!!!

@17gianulias If you don’t mind letting me know, what major did you apply under, what is your gpa and what was your reason for appealing?

@17gianulias also if you don’t mind…how quickly did you get your appeal in? I sent mine in on 3/17/2017 they emailed me on 3/28/2017 that they would review my appeal and let me know.
