Hello! I hope I am doing this right!
I was just recently denied admission at SDSU. My decision arrived much later than others because I had international coursework from over a decade ago (Canada). I contacted admissions to find out why I was denied. The admissions officer told me that I was denied simply because they ran out of space due to the influx of applications. He said my gpa is strong (4.0) and I have an ADT which makes me a promising candidate so he strongly encouraged me to appeal their decision.
I submitted my appeal package last Wednesday. Since my denial had nothing to do with my grades, most of it was detailing my volunteer work. That might sound like a “reach” for some, but it’s the reason why I’ve retuned to school and really paints a clear picture of who I am. I also mentioned that I’ll be moving to San Diego this summer for my partner’s career and gently reminded them of my grades.
The admissions officer also told me that if I don’t get in for Fall, that I should apply for Spring 2022 if they offer Psychology.
Some background:
Status: Denied on April 13th, 2021
Major: Pre-Psychology
GPA: 4.0
ADT: Yes (+verified)
Golden 4: Yes
Local: No (California resident)
Accepted: SJSU, CSUSM, CSUMB, and SFSU.
Denied: SDSU
Additional Info: Non-traditional student (returning to school in my 30s).
I have two questions:
-
Has anybody experienced this kind of denial, or heard of this before? My academic counselor at my CC told me that her colleague has a student in a very similar situation (applied to SDSU, similar gpa, Int’l/CDN transcripts, denied on the 13th as well).
-
If this is common, how often do applicants like me get accepted? Am I still at the bottom of their priority list? I am very well aware that psych is one of the most popular programs at SDSU.
-
Is Psychology usually offered in the Spring at SDSU? I tried to look this up and couldn’t find anything about past spring offerings.
-
Any other advice? I understand that I might not find out about their decision until July (as mentioned by the admissions officer). I have enrolled at CSUSM, so I have a backup in case this doesn’t go my way. I just have my heart set on SDSU. It’s just feels like the better fit for me.
Thank you so much for your time!
