Hello,
I just got waitlisted for nursing at SDSU and I was planning to write an appeal letter. I know that nursing is one of the most competitive majors, and I feel like for this year the numbers have dramatically increased. I was wondering if I have the chance to be removed from the waitlist through an appeal. If there are any nursing students who have been admitted off an appeal at SDSU for nursing please say so!
CSU GPA: 4.1
SAT: Not taken
Extracurriculars:
- Volunteer caregiver three years
- Medical internship (2 months due to COVID)
- Hospital Escort (4 months due to COVID)
- Marching Band (4 Years, Drum major 2 years, clarinet section leader 1)
- Jazz Band (4 Years, Jazz Manager for 2 years)
- Wind Ensemble (4 Years, Wind Ensemble President for 2 years)
- Music for the Mind President (4 Years, 1 year VP, 2 years President and we played music for elderly homes)
- Ukulele Club (3 Years President)
- Inspire to Be Club (4 years, Vice president 1 year)
- Key Club (Member 2 Years)
- NHS (2 Years)
- Ralphs Job (1 Year)
Appeals for nursing are going to be difficult, but as students SIR to other universities, you may have a chance.
Did you contact the Marching Band director? If SDSU is your school target, you may want to check out the band.
I have not contacted the marching band personally. Should I do it now even though I have been waitlisted?
You could try but would you be willing to go to SDSU without a nursing major? It’s either direct admit in Freshman year or by transferring into the program from a CC or other university. You can’t change majors into nursing. @Gumbymom thoughts?
My understanding is that you cannot appeal if you have been waitlisted since you do have a chance for an acceptance. Appeals are usually reserved for being denied admission. I would contact SDSU admissions to confirm.
From the SDSU website about appeals: The appeals process is only for applicants who have a serious and compelling reason that they feel the committee should consider.
I actually got waitlisted for nursing at SDSU also. I could see that you’re a high school student. I actually applied as a transfer student from a CC (LA area), and I actually had a zoom with one of their admission advisers. I asked how waitlists work for nursing and if they had accepted anyone off the waitlist. They did state that they accepted people off the waitlist before, but you won’t be able to figure because every year is different and it fluctuates. I heard that 5 people in 2018 got off the waitlist, but idk if that’s transfer or high school students. For appeals, sadly there aren’t any
I was hoping to write an appeal. But that is okay, I will get clarification tomorrow during the virtual office hours
I have already received acceptance from CSUF, CSLB, and CSUSM. I am considering CSUF since it is the only direct entry program I was fully accepted to. But I am waiting for UCLA, Northeastern, and NYU
Therefore, I am not considering to switch majors. I am set on this nursing route
CSU Fullerton is an excellent option and congratulations!!

Thank you so much! I am so thankful I got accepted there for direct entry I know a lot of people didn’t get accepted this year, it is not my favorite option but I am hoping NYU Meyers will accept me
I concur! Fullerton is a strong school.
NYU is very expensive. Your money will go further at CSUF. NYU is known to be very stingy with financial aid. It’s nearly $80k a year!
You make a good point. I am weighing the options. NYU is my number one choice since it is such a great opportunity and my dream to live in NYC. Although it is expensive, I am considering the experience. I live in California and I have a Cal grant, therefore CSUF will be more affordable, but I doubt NYU Meyers will accept me other applicants are so strong.
RE: NYU, you can move to NY after you graduate.
You cannot borrow more than $6K per year.
If you are on Calgrants, your parents wont be able to borrow $80K per year. It’s too much money-that’s $320,000 for a 4 yr. degree. People who borrow this kind of money never get out of debt. They don’t qualify for more money to buy a house, car, etc. You wont make $80K as a nurse coming out of school.
@Gumbymom, @thumper1, your thoughts?
You are so lucky to have CSUF as an affordable nursing direct admit option.
Re: NYU…this is from their website:
“While NYU does not guarantee we will meet the full demonstrated need of every admitted student, our recent move to a more need-based awarding model for scholarships has helped to make NYU a reality for more and more students.”
NYU costs close to $80,000 a year.
Have your parents indicated how much they can pay each year for your college costs? Ask them…this will be a very important piece to your college selection choice.

Hello, they are willing to pay the tuition for NYU. They think that the school is amazing and if the opportunity is present they think I should take it.
You said you were CalGrant eligible which means that your parents would have to borrow a huge sum of money. The issue is that some of these parent loans are pay-as-you-go. That means your parents would have to pay thousands while you are going to school. Do your parents have that kind of cash on hand?
NYU isn’t worth it. I had an intern who attended NYU. Ten years after she finished her program, she’s still living with her parents because she has to pay $2000 per month on her loan. Is that what you hope for your future? Her boyfriend has large loans as well, and they can’t afford to get married. She has to use her Mom’s car because her car broke down and she couldn’t afford to get it fixed or buy a new one.
Don’t saddle your parents with this kind of debt as they age. They wont have any retirement savings because they’ll be too busy trying to pay off the loans with interest.
That is true, definitely something to consider. I actually talked to my mother who is a registered nurse and she told me that at the end of the day, you just need to pass the NCLEX and you are going to be hired somewhere. Thank you for your response and for letting me reevaluate my college experience for the long term. CSUF is affordable and accredited in nursing and looking back at it I am shocked that I was one of the few students who was accepted direct entry. If I do get accepted to SDSU, I will definitely take that spot, but I am going to prepare myself for a possible denial since a lot of other students got waitlisted for nursing too who are most likely more qualified.

My daughter was denied admission and is working on an appeal packet. She has a 4.2 weighted gpa and applied for the psych program. I know that major is impacted, but I was shocked that it was not considered good enough. She is currently a senior and from CA so SATs were not taken. Her latest transcript shows a 4.4 gpa for the fall 2020 semester and we are submitting those along with her AP score (a 4 on the Psych exam). Any advice on what to include in her appeal packet/letter? We were thinking of submitting letters of recommendation as they were not requested in the original application, but give amazing insight into who she is and the role they could expect her to play on campus. She has also tried out for the cheer program and has had a decent response from them (they are allowing her to continue the try-out process until she hears back regarding the appeal). Thoughts?
Appeals are really difficult because they typically don’t reverse the decision UNLESS there was an error in paperwork: grades, counselor submission on the part of, either the university, or the high school. Adding LOR’s without being requested may not work.
Currently, they have been admitting transfer students from local and instate schools who have met the requirements for admission. Some local CC’s have articulation agreements and contracts with SDSU for local CC students. SDSU has ~7 very large CC’s (not including the small desert locations) in the local vicinity and most of those have the articulation agreements. If a number of those students applied for psych majors, and have already started coursework in the major, they may be prioritized.
If she thinks that SDSU is her school, she could go to a CC and then try to transfer in as a Junior.
Edited to add: the colleges really consider the unweighted GPA’s.
