SDSU as an out of state student

Hey everyone,
I am a student from westchester county new york and I recently visited SDSU and loved it. I understand SDSU is a competitive place and I was wondering if you guys could give me a little feed back. I have a 3.1 GPA (standard classes) and I just took the SAT. I havent gotten the scores back but on my last test i scored an 1890 (580 math, 640 reading, 670 writing). I am the captain of our football team at my highschool and I am also a part of my churchs' youth group and I am a junior deacon at my church I also just received a volunteer award for my club.

I realize my GPA is on the low end, however, my schools naviance says the average accepted from my school is a 3.2, my highschool is nationally ranked and even the standard classes are really difficult. I was hoping they would see me as an out of state student who could pay higher tuition (which is not a problem) which I know they need and also a kid from the east coast could add some geographic diversity (i was the only out of state student at our info session). Do I have a chance? Its not my only option but I really did like it and I feel like its a good fit for me. Thanks for helping out

Your GPA is on the low side. SDSU only accepted 12% students within the 3.0 to 3.25 GPA range last year and the STATs for this years class will probably a little higher.
According to the SDSU website there are 3 things that they use for their acceptance criteria.

  1. a-g courses have been met. Make sure you have completed all of these courses see link:<a href=“Office of Admissions | SDSU”>Office of Admissions | SDSU;
  2. Eligibility index. You can calculate with the following formula (GPA x 800) + (SAT Math score + SAT Critical Reading score). If you plan to major in STEM (Engineering/CS etc…) you would want to have an index around 4100+.
  3. They then rank you based on your major with the highest in each major accepted first, working their way down until all slots are filled.
    Being OOS will help if you are full pay and like you said they could use the money plus the geographic diversity.
    With your GPA and estimated scores now, I would say a 50/50 chance now. Try to get the GPA higher and hope for a great SAT score. Good Luck

Just realized I posted this is the wrong place sorry!
