SDSU Denied Transfer Students - Who is appealing?

I am a Psych major. 4.0 student earning an AA-T degree at the end of this semester. I was denied today. Apparently I was denied because I don't go to one of their "location" schools, yet I go to Palomar College which is an hour away and I know people who live farther away and got in who rank way below me. I feel as if this is extremely unjust. SDSU has been my top school since high school and everything I have done since then has been for this school.

Really sorry to hear that you got denied. My brother is the same major as you and got denied as well and is planning to appeal. However, I was wondering how you figured out on the reason as to why you got denied? Good luck with everything!

@kbutterwo‌ I know people who will be appealing but they were in the local area which means any community college south of the 52 freeway. As for us who go to miracosta and Palomar. We literally have 0.00009999% of successfully appealing. Here’s why. Unless you have a major which San Marcos doesn’t offer, then we are not in their service area and are paired with San Marcos. I know a few people in my class (miracosta) who got in with a 3.4 and below GPA which is just laughable because I have a higher GPA. Essentially, take it as a blessing. Why go to a school that makes decisions as silly as they made?

@sdsu93 I called Admissions and told the lady to explain to me why in the world I was not accepted. That was pretty much the only answer she could come up with. @nthoside I can’t believe that. It is just so wrong on so many levels. But I am starting to agree with your last statement.

@kbutterwo did you apply to UCSD? Is there any reason why you prefer SDSU to UCSD? UCSD doesn’t have that location restriction does it?

@Yenmor No I did not. When I began going to community college it was an option, but after talking to my counselor about what I wanted to do (counseling psychology, more specifically art therapy) he told me CSU was the best route for me. In light of recent events, I am starting to feel as if I have made the wrong decisions. It is very hard for me to grasp that at the moment.

@nthoside‌ This decision-making process is typical of all CSU’s with impacted majors. A student applying for transfer into an impacted major at CSUSM from an SDSU cc will be denied admission for the same reason if there are only enough spaces for local students. SDSU has six community colleges with large student populations to accommodate. CSUSM only has two CCs with student bodies not nearly the size of those in the SDSU area.

The local-priority accommodation is not a SDSU policy, but a CSU policy and state law (a part of the same law that enacted the ADT system). Their hands are tied when it comes to who they can let in, and who they cannot. And with an overwhelming amount of students applying from the six “local” schools (eight, if you count those who apply from Mira Costa and Palomar for majors not offered at CSUSM), that leaves very, very little space available for those outside of the area.

@kbutterwo‌ As far as appealing goes, you have to present new and compelling evidence that was not on your application. Having a 4.0 and really wanting to go to SDSU is not a reason. Look at your major at CSUSM and look at your major at SDSU. Does SDSU offer an area of emphasis that CSUSM does not? Or is there a current research project within your major at SDSU (and CSUSM has nothing similar) that relates to the field you would like to specialize in?

Other new and compelling evidence would be proving that attending CSUSM would create a financial hardship (ie your parents are moving to the San Diego area, you plan to move with them, and cannot afford or are unable to commute).

You are guaranteed into a CSU school with an ADT, so your application will be redirected (probably to CSUSM) and you will be admitted somewhere. If you do not want to attend the school you are admitted to and are not let into SDSU on appeal, you can always begin taking upper-level classes for your major through SDSU open-enrollment. This is not the cheapest option, but it will certainly bump you up on the priority list when it comes to admissions next year.

@ kbutterwo Would you consider waiting a year and attempting UCSD or even another UC?
A year may seem like a long time, but it really isn’t. But good luck, with whatever you decide.

I’m appealing. My major isn’t offered at csusm, I’m an art history major, CSU breadth complete, all major prep except for Asian art(not offered at Palomar), 3.52 transfer GPA. No AA-T, they don’t offer that at Palomar for my major either. I have special circumstances making it nearly impossible for me to move out of the area, plus a few other things to put in my appeal. Good luck with yours!

Has anyone heard back on their appeal yet?

@lilchickvicicous‌ nope! Haha what a joke
