I just heard SDSU does a form of a weed out in the Engineering Department, where something like 1/3 will not go beyond lower division classes due to grades. Can anyone speak to this, and is this typical for all Cal States and UC’s?
There are weed out classes for many majors at the Cal States and UC’s. My younger son was a CS major at SDSU and some of the so called “weed out” classes involved the Math courses and Assembly language. For Biology/Pre-Med/Science majors, it is usually the General Chem and/or the Organic Chem Series. The so called “weed out” classes are there not to discourage students from pursuing the major, but do determine if the students are able to handle the rigors of the upper division courses.
Many Engineering students get discouraged with the amount of Math involved in the Engineering majors. If you have a solid background and willing to put in the hard work, you will succeed.
The 1/3 reference is typical to many Engineering majors at many of the schools. Until you really start taking some the required prep classes for any major, most students do not have an idea of what is involved in pursing said major.
Great reply. How does he like the program at SDSU. I was considering transferring there this fall if i get accepted. I have all the math and science completed.
