SDSU is my Dream School! Will my stats qualify me?

Hello everyone, I am currently an approaching Senior in High School and I have some questions and concerns on whether I will make it into SDSU. I plan to Major in Information Technology. I live 5 minutes away and I am applying in-state. I am a 2nd generation Asian American and an only child.
My current GPA Cumulative is a 4.0
What concerns me the most is my SAT scores and whether it will get me in.
I have taken the SAT a total of 4 times already and my highest score has been a 1060. Unfortunately. I feel this will greatly diminish my chances of getting accepted which is why I need some insight from students. Should I test my odds and take the ACT?
I would appreciate any other advice for the college application process.

If you’re unsatisfied with the SAT, definitely take the ACT. Some people do much better on one or the other. Your GPA is there though, just try to raise ur test score a little bit and you got it!

Thank you!

CSU capped weighted GPA? UC capped weighted= CSU capped weighted.

Average SAT for SDSU 2018 was 1264.

Unforunately, I cannot check my total grades to see what CSU capped weighted GPA I have. However I do remember my counselor telling me it was 3.9-4.0. I am interested in the Computer Engineering field.

SDSU admits by eligibility index and major. Once you have your CSU GPA, you can plug it into this formula:
(CSU Capped weighted GPA x800) + (SAT Math + EBRW). If your CSU Capped weighted GPA is 3.9 for example, then your Eligibility index would be 3.9x800+1060= 4180. Target EI for SDSU is around 4300+ and the average for 2018 was 4408 based on an average CSU capped weighted GPA of 3.93, SAT of 1264 and ACT of 27. 2019 stats are not available as of yet. Being a local applicant will give you priority however that does not guarantee you an acceptance. The CSU’s do superscore the SAT and ACT and will take the highest Math and EBRW. Between the 4 tests, what are your highest scores.? Also for Computer Engineering, schools will want applicants to have a higher than average SAT Math score along with good HS Math course rigor.

I would definitely consider the ACT since your SAT score is not competitive at the moment. SDSU will accept up to the November SAT/ACT sitting. Have you done any test prep?

I would also look at other CSU schools such as San Marcos, Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona etc… since SDSU will be a tough admit.

Thank you for the insight. I have taken 2 AP’s so far (Computer Science Principles & World History) I have earned 3s on both and my junior year, I have taken all honor classes with exception of PE. Senior year, I am taking full honor classes and college credited classes as well. I am currently studying for the SAT and have taken several prep classes in advance. My parents despite being upper middle class, are not financially supporting me which will most likely mean I will have to loan. Do you recommend taking the 2 year 2 year community college route (from either Grossmont College or Mesa)?

As everyone has said you really need to get a test score up higher. The GPA is solid if it is a 4.0. Go for the ACT. Try it, the ACT, and see if that is easier for you. It may be if math is the weakness on the SAT. If you have done the SAT four times that range is likely what you are going to get if you don’t prep. If you take the SAT you really need to shoot for a 1300 for SDSU. Test prep doing math at Khan Academy online reviewing the high level math. If your weakness is the vocab and passages practice those. Take practice tests at home beforehand under as close to actual conditions to feel completely comfortable with the time crunch and to feel like you are used to taking it. Good luck! It is a great school and I hope you get in

Thank you, I really hope I do get in. I am fighting really hard to bring up my ACT and SAT. It has taken a toll on my mind since March but I only have few more chances to do it.

@ryannduong: So you are saying your parents will not help you with college costs? If so, just know that their income will still be required when you fill out the FASFA- financial aid forms and based on their income, you will be given FA or not. As a student, you can only take out loans in the amount below:
$5500 as a Freshman
$6500 as a Sophomore
$7500 as a Junior and a Senior.

SDSU’s tuition is $7510/year so unless you qualify for the Federal Pell grant or Cal grants, you will have a gap of a couple of thousand dollars just for tuition.

If finances are an issue, then the CC to SDSU transfer route might be a better option. SDSU gives a much higher priority to local SD transfers, it will help save you some money to put towards your last 2 years and is still a great backup plan if you are not accepted as a Freshman.

Regarding Honors classes at your HS, only UC approved Honors courses will get the extra weighting in the CSU GPA calculation so you can look which of the Honors classes at your HS are UC approved. Any HS can call their classes “Honors” but for the CSU GPA it will make a difference if they are UC approved or not.

Type in the name of HS on this link and look for the Yellow star courses which are will be weighted in your GPA calculation.

In your case (both academically and financially) the CC-> SDSU route sounds like a better option.

I am definitely interested in CC transfer to SDSU program and I was wondering that if I were to continue through that route, would the degree I get be inferior to as if I entered university as a 4 year student? I am asking because I want to know what would look better on job resume.

On a resume you only put the 4-year degree, so there’s no difference. I’d attend the cc then transfer.
