I am planning to major in computer engineering and I am looking for safety/backup colleges. I am debating between San diego state and san jose state. I know San Diego has a better academic record, but San Jose is close to the Silicon valley (apt for my major) and home so it seems like a better option. Suggestions?

San Diego is a big city with lots of tech internship opportunities. Qualcom, HP and many others have big operations there. SDSU is much more selective so, you might not make it in. That kinda rules it out as a Safety. Both schools offer credible degrees - San Diego is a more fun place to live, especially while you are young.

I’d apply to both and see what happens.

Both only look at a sub-set of grades and only the M&R sections of the SAT. Use CSU Mentor to calculate your Index.

Last year, it took a CSU index about 4150 to make in to SDSU.

CSUs consider SAT CR and M only (superscored). They calculate eligibility index as GPA * 800 + SATCR + SATM, where GPA is calculated by the CSU method (10th grade and later grades in a-g courses, +1 for up to 8 semesters’ worth of honors courses).
