SDSU vs SJSU vs Long Beach State

I got accepted into all three schools but I can’t decide which school I should go to for my major. My major is Social Work. Do you guys have an suggestions? Thank you!

I don’t know much about the program in these 3 schools, but forced to make a guess I’d say there isn’t a huge difference among them. So pay attention to which you’d rather attend. SJSU is a commuter school. Don’t know about LBSU, but probably the same. SDSU isn’t very residential, but many kids are from out of the SD area so they live in the region, often in Mission or Pacific Beach. I suggest you visit all three, get a sense of what the campus feels like, talk to some kids as you walk around.

If it were me, here is another thing I would do. Every U has tons of student clubs, including ones associated with just about every major. They usually have a web or Facebook page, easy to find with a search engine. For LBSU, as an example, there is https://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/social-work/ASSW1.htm I would make plans to visit each college and email an officer in the club, saying I’ve been admitted and are visiting on such-and-such day; would they have time to meet for a cup of coffee that day or do they know someone who might?

For Social Work,I’d go with SDSU, then Cal State LB, then SJSU.
Did you get into the Honors Program at any (did you apply)?

Percentage of frosh living in the dorms (a proxy for non-commuter students):

CSULB: 36%
SDSU: 69%
SJSU: 56%

This number is a poor proxy for understanding whether or not a school has a commuter-school feel. Frosh are often encouraged to live in the dorms, and kids want to get a bit of that “college feel” by living away at school even if it is in their hometown.

Those who know the setting of SJSU or CSULB know that it is not like the college-town setting of campuses such as SLO or Chico. Those who know grads of those schools know they talk about its commuter school feel.

Look at what SJSU, for example says about itself

Now that the projects are open, the SJSU Common Data Set shows that only 13% of students live on campus, and as the earlier stat show most of those are accounted for by the frosh.

Regarding living near SDSU: You’ll find more and more SDSU students are now living on or near campus than they were 10 - 30 years ago. Lots of non-college owned/affiliated apartments, condos, “mini-dorms,” houses, etc. are available in the College Area. Many sophomores and juniors live closer to campus on Montezuma Rd., 54th Street, Reservoir, Alvarado, College Avenue, Collwood, and other surrounding neighborhoods that are walking distance to campus. SDSU has an underground trolley station, and two stops eastbound are a few huge apartment complexes that cater to students. For older students, some choose to live in a close by city like La Mesa (quick drive/bus/trolley from campus) or in one of the surrounding communities (the city of San Diego is divided into several “communities”) like Del Cerro and San Carlos, both areas have quite a few apartment complexes/rentals/condos that rent to students. Del Cerro/San Carlos are about 2 miles away from the campus if you take College Avenue over I-8. The College Area Community (which includes SDSU) is a residential area, but sometimes due to how the area was designed it is hard to see all the streets that are hidden away unless you are purposely driving through the area looking for them. Plus SDSU has added new dorms and apartment complexes on/near campus, with a new multi-use dorm opening in August.

What I have enjoyed seeing is how busy and popular the school is on the weekends, holidays, etc. from August - June. Lots of activities and events, as well as students using the ARC, Aquaplex, Student Union, etc., and if there is a sporting event, the place is absolutely wild. Many, many years ago when I was a student there, the campus was somewhat quiet during the weekends/evenings. I was over there on one of the recent holidays, and students were everywhere.

@sarahhhuynh - Congratulations on your acceptances!! I hope you’ll be attending Explore SDSU on March 19th. It is a fun day, and you’ll be able to have any questions answered about your program and the campus.

SJSU has a very good Social Work program. I also was accepted into their school. Long Beach State is a good school as well but very crowded.

SDSU is a very good school too! Congratulations though on being accepted to all 3 schools. They’re all really good.

But I think If I were you I would definitely attend SDSU! Great school.
