Seap 2013

Just received my email. I didn’t get it. Good luck to everyone else!

^Sorry about that. What did the rejection email say? Did it say how many applicants applied and how many were accepted?

Rejected too. Over 2000 applied, not sure how many accepted. Luck to everyone else!

March 4, 2013

Dear XXXXXXX,

Thank you for your application to the Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP). This year, the Office of Naval Research received applications from over 2,000 outstandingly qualified students, making the selection process extremely difficult. Regrettably, at this time, we are unable to offer you an appointment for the 2013 program.

Representatives of the participating Navy labs conscientiously reviewed each application. Selections reflected the best match between research interests of the applicants and the ongoing projects of the Navy lab.

There may be a few candidates who will be unable to accept the offer to participate in this summer’s program, at which time a few alternate candidates will receive offers. We will notify you if you become an alternate candidate.

We encourage you to apply again next year, since the research priorities at each center can change from year to year.

Once again thank you for your application, and best wishes in your future professional endeavors.

Sincerely,

The SEAP Team

Just received an email of acceptance for SEAP at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. I didn’t make it into my original first lab choice (SPAWAR San Diego), but instead was chosen as an “alternate” there. I feel very blessed to have been chosen at NPS and believe the engineering department there is actually a better fit for me overall.

It is a bummer for those who have posted here that did not make it. Every year SEAP turns away hundreds of exceptionally qualified applicants and it’s always crazy to learn why some make it and others don’t.

Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting to hear the outcome!

Anyone hear from Charleston? That is the only place I applied and haven’t heard anything.

I got the award to research at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island =) I live in Monterey and have worked at the Naval Postgraduate School and you guys are definitely going to love it. Employees can take classes there as well!(If you can find a professor who will accept a high school student into their class)

^Congrats aBipolarBear. Going clear across the country to Newport, RI will be an adventure! Just curious, what kind of work did you do at NPS in Monterey? Are you an ROTC student, or are your parents employed there? Also, if you have any ideas for inexpensive housing for the summer down there, please share :-).

I absolutely can’t wait to see Rhode Island, I got a scholarship to go on an East Coast College Tour with my school last March and have been thinking about moving to the east coast ever since. Almost every college I applied to is over there =)

At NPS I worked in the Center for Cyber Warfare in the Computer Science department from 9-5 5 days a week with about 6 other employees, mostly college aged but one other high school senior. I took Russian Foreign Policy while I was working there after dealing with the registrar for a while and it’s the best class I’ve ever taken and the teacher has written countless recs for me.

I applied to the Naval ROTC program, but I barely hit the deadline and the committee just received my whole application about a week ago (I turned it in so late because I thought I would get the Stokes Scholarship, but was rejected. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch!) So I’m not sure if I’ll get an NROTC scholarship for school. My mom is employed at the Naval Postgraduate School as a research assistant, but the professor hiring did not know that and I really didn’t want him to because I wanted to feel like I got the job on my own. The process consisted of the professor sending out an email to schools asking for people who could program, and I sent in my resume and had an informal interview and was hired.

One of the students working with me from Cal Poly SLO stayed at the Youth Hostel in Monterey and said that it was a good deal. later in the summer he rented a room in a house that was very close to the school.

I am so confused. I never heard anything from my base, Charleston, so I called. They said that they have 7 internship slots. Each of the 7 participating departments pick their selected intern and also one alternate if their main person doesn’t accept.

I wasn’t selected as the first pick, BUT I was selected as an alternate for 2 different departments. Should I feel honored? Is this a good sign or just frustrating news?

Thoughts?

mich5225, I think being an alternate for two positions is not a bad thing. Certainly, being the first pick is something to rejoice over, but when figuring that the overall selection/admission rate is only about 10%, you should feel somewhat honored that you are a bona fide alternate. I heard that there are always SEAP applicants who drop out and being an alternate for two positions may mean you end up getting enrolled after all. I think you should send some emails to the lab to reaffirm your STRONG DESIRE to participate so you stay fresh on their mind.

Thank you for the thoughts and suggestions. I have already emailed every program level SEAP email that I could find. Been thinking about it over the weekend and isn’t it a possibility that whoever is in front of me might have been offered a position at another lab? Maybe the other position was their first pick and they won’t accept the Charleston one. I know that earlier in these posts, someone stated that they were picked for one position, but an alternate for another. There might be a lot of duplicates out there.

If you were picked, do you know when you have to decide whether to accept or not? How long of a wait am I looking at? Thanks!

Found out that those who are finalist have to accept by March 15 or forfeit their spot. Alternates should know the next week. Good news, not too long to wait.

I am sure there are duplicates. The award letter I received actually mentioned that there were some applicants who were accepted at two different labs (and that it was required for such applicants to choose by March 15th). This is possible since the labs do not communicate with each other. The San Diego lab (SPAWAR) was my second contact and they had no idea I had also been contacted by NPS in Monterey.

So, there is still hope alive for you mich5225!

did not get in. Was really bummed out about it for a few weeks, but something great came along. I will be going to Governor’s School in my state and also serving an internship with the Department of State in Washington, DC. Happier with this.
