Searching For Match/ Safety Computer Science Schools

Hello, I have a 3.86 UW GPA and a 4.38 W GPA. My ACT is a 27 without writing. As for my courseload, I have taken mostly honors and 5 AP classes. My extracirculars are great. I live in the New England area, but location is not the biggest deal. Which CS schools should I apply to? I have already applied E.A. to UMass Amherst.

Thanks

What is your home state? How much can your family afford?

Hey I’m also interested in computer science  some programs I like are at UIUC, UT Austin, Northeastern (because of coop), UMD-CP, Tufts, and UGA (second to Ga Tech)

@Erin’s Dad
Massachusetts. I am willing to spend at max ~40 k per year for a safety or match

@XCjunior2016‌ - Thanks for the suggestions, but I have already ruled out most of those schools. UIUC and UT Austin would be high reaches for me. UMD-CP is again a bit of a reach, since I do have a low ACT. I have completely ruled out Northeastern,Tufts, and UGA. I found that I can get software development experience through internships rather than paying Northeastern’s 60ish K for coop and city life. I never though about Tufts, because there CS program is relatively new and it does not have much a name in the software development industry. UGA seems like a great program if I was instate, but as an OOS, I am not really considering it. If you dont agree feel free to apply to any of these schools. These were just my thoughts and opinions.

With a 27 ACT, Northeastern would likely rule you out. Their mid 50% is 31-33.

@tomofboston‌ Well as I said earlier, I do not believe that Northeastern is a good university for CS especially because it is needlessly exspensive due to its location in Boston. My sister actually went to Northeastern and she regrets not just going to a state university

I stuck to some northeastern schools: UMD-Baltimore County (37K), Rochester Institute of Technology (49K), Stony Brook (36K), University of Pittsburgh (43K), University at Buffalo (38K), Rutgers (45K), Ohio State (40K).

Would any of these be possibilities for admission: North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Stony Brook, Minnesota.

What is your ACT or SAT with WRITING? Most schools will require you to take the exam with writing.

I don’t think his chances with an ACT 27 are very high for VT or UMinn as an OOS student.

Do you mean that your parents are willing to spend $40k or do you have $160k saved?

The 27 on ACT is going to hurt you at most private schools with good CS (e.g. Pitt, U of R).

UMass Amherst has a highly ranked CS program (something like 20-25th). Since you are in state with a decent GPA it is probably a safety and I would say just go there if you are truly interested in CS. If UMass doesn’t appeal to you because of the size or “feel” of the place, very few of the other recommended schools will either.

Honestly the 27 ACT severely limits your options. I work in software in the Boston area and some of the best people I have worked with have come from UMass Lowell and Dartmouth. Do not count out the UMass system if you want to go into software development.

Do you absolutely have to go out of state? I would just wait for that UMass acceptance and call it a day.

^^something to consider, OP.

@ormdad‌ I am excited about going to UMass Amherst for CS. I love how it is super cheap, well regarded in CS, does not have many gen eds that can not be knocked out with AP exams, and its size. I was just looking for a safety or match that I could apply to if I do not get into UMass, because I really do not want to take a gap year.

Well something is wrong if a 27 ACT keeps you out of UMass Amherst with your GPA and rigorous schedule.

But if it does, UML has a respectable CS program at a great price. Almost any other safety will cost you +20K/yr and might not put you in any better of a position after graduation.

As a safety measure, since I would really not be happy if I go to UML, should I apply undeclared for a University?
