Hello, College Confidential community. With the scores I have, I was wondering what kinds of universities would be my target schools, especially for computer science.

weighted GPA: 4.46
unweighted GPA: 3.91

ACT: 30 composite (28 English, 34 Math, 28 Reading, 29 Science)
SAT II: 760 Math II, 680 U.S. History
AP: 4 U.S. history

ECs
- around 50 hours spent volunteering at local library
- have about 170 hours of work experience tutoring middle school kids
- spent about 80 hours into club activities at school, was also treasurer

Awards:
- Honor Roll all 4 years
- QuestBridge Finalist 2011 ~ 2012

Etc:
- Didn't get to participate in much ECs out of school because I had to work to help out family.
- First generation Asian immigrant
- First generation college student
- Household income <$25,000
- Only took 2 AP courses (school only provide 2 AP courses; currently taking AP Calculus AB, so no AP scores for that yet)
- High school has an API score of 930

As a California resident needing financial aid, the UCs and CSUs should provide a range of schools good for computer science from “reach” to “safety” level for admissions. Unfortunately, if you are a senior now and have not applied, you missed the November 30 deadline to apply for freshman admission for fall 2012 (except at a few of the least selective CSUs).

Put “net price calculator” and “financial aid estimator” into each school’s web site.

If you are looking to go outside of California, look at the smaller private [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools. They often have good financial aid packages and if you are not shooting for the most prestigious, your test scores and grades are fine to get in.

Aha, yeah, I am indeed a senior, but I applied to 6 UCs already (all but Santa Cruz, Merced, and Riverside). I just wanted to widen my options when April comes. I didn’t apply to and CSUs because I figured I would at least be accepted into one of the UC I have applied to, did I over-estimated myself?

Thanks for the suggestion! I will look more into the smaller colleges on that list.

You will probably get into at least one of the UCs you applied to, though the way competition is increasing, you could not be sure. Of the CSUs, I would have suggested considering Cal Poly SLO because it is good, and SJSU if you really needed a rock solid admissions safety in Silicon Valley (i.e. easier access to recruiters in the career center). But also, UCSC would have been worth considering due to its proximity to Silicon Valley.

But, anyway, your other choices are likely to be schools with generous need and/or merit aid (generally private schools). Of the public schools, Virginia and North Carolina are said to offer need aid to out of state students, but most others are likely to be too expensive to an out of state student from a low income family.
