SEAS AP Credit & Placement Exams

I think this topic concerns many students so I'll just start it now.

Can someone please post a summary of how Columbia uses AP exam scores for placement and the placement exams that are offered?

I tried to find some information on the website but I don't really understand how it works.

Thanks

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-university/136216-seas-accept-ap-credit.html</a> and [2008 - 2009 SEAS Bulletin:Advanced Placement Credit Card](http://www.engineering.columbia.edu/bulletin-misc-pages/ap_credit_chart.html) sum up what you need on AP exams, what placement you will get on courses, and how much credit you’ll get. I believe for the ones that don’t say “Placement Status” on the chart, you’ll get the credits and they’ll apply to your nontech courses. I know for Chemistry, regardless of your AP score, you can take a placement exam in the fall to see which class you belong in.

However, if you make the AP cut, could you then not take the placement exam and still take one of the higher level classes that the placement exam would have determined if you were eligible for?

Still wondering about this… if I make the cut for the AP credit for chemistry, could I not take the placement exam and still take either the intensive chem course or early organic chem course?

Maybe the intensive G-chem (which I would STRONGLY recommend - probably my strongest recommendation for any incoming freshmen who are even halfway decent at chem). Probably not the orgo.

I think I talked my way into intensive g-chem without taking the exam.
