wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions re: a CD SEAS student’s best bets for first term courses:
the handbook reccomended:
MATH104 (or 114)
PHYS150 (or 140)
CHEM101 + 053
A writing seminar
Any 100 level engineering course

I’m leaning towards MechE or Material Science, though possible CompE or EE.

Is intro to engineering [EAS101] really worth it (couldn’t i just find all that info online)? I kind of want to take MEAM101…

Also, I’ve heard not to take more than one lab a semester, not to mention that i’m limited to 5.5cu’s. i’d rather take a phys lab than a chem lab, but it seems that you can’t take CHEM101 w/o the lab, whereas PHYS140 is 150 minus the lab. would i be missing much if I didn’t take a phys lab?

also, I feel like i’d probably be able to manage in MATH114, but that i’d like to do better than just “manage” and master math. even though a lot of 104 would probably be going over highschool calc, i’m there’s material i haven’t learned, could use a 'fresher (been abroad for a year, post high-school), and is taught at a college level. besides, a gpa boost is always handy.

Thanks

TAKE MEAM 101. You will be very unsatsified with EAS101 (The mechanical engineering lab is making a little drawing in a CAD program and watching a laser cut it out... yay art class. Now did that teach you anything about MEAM you didn't know?). You can take both labs, a lot of people did it. The consensus was that the physics lab was easy (I haven't taken it yet) but I thought the Chem labs were very time consuming and were graded on the strict side.

About math, you really don't use much 104 for 114. There are times you do need to know how to do series or how to do some of the fancier integrals. But as a rule, I generally had a difficult time helping people with their 104 hw because I had forgotten most of the rules =D And I did fine in 114. It's all up to you

do. not. tae. eas101.

re: taking 2 labs: i'm limited to 5.5 credits. I think if i take 2 labs, then PHYS + CHEM is alread 3 of those. the other 2 i would use on two out of writing seminar, math, and meam (seems like EAS101 is a no-no). is it better then to drop the phys lab and be able to get all 3 that semester, or should i take the lab (is it important later on - maybe grad school or a requirement for another class...). if take the lab, then which of the others is okay to drop?

you can ask for extension to 6+ credits, just ask your advisor. you can wait to take your writing seminar. You should really check your requirements for your major. Meam requires 150, which means you need to take the lab

Your advisor will not allow you to take 6 credits. ESPECIALLY not to take physics and chem with labs.

Freshmen cannot take more than 5.5 credits in the first semester (and I believe there is no exception to that rule).

Later, you can apply to take more than 5.5 credits. This is extremely easy to get approved if you have the gpa cutoff (something between 3.0 and 3.5), but is not available for first semester freshmen, I think.

you sure? i thought i heard that this kid on my floor did it. but you do need 150. you can take the class and the lab separately if you want, but you have to be careful, cuz it's graded weird. If you take 150, the lab is worth 10% of your grade, and it's 1.5 credits. If you take 140 and 050, the lecture (140) is worth 1 credit, and the lab (050) is worth .5 credits. Depending on what your strong suit is, pick one of the two paths. Chem doesn't matter since the lab is not integrated with the lecture.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here

No, not all engineering majors require the physics lab. MechE probably requires it. I know MSE don't require it. I'm not sure about Comp E.

As for taking phsycis and chem without labs, your advisor won't stop you, but you are at your descretion as to what amount of work you want.

yeah meam does require it
