SEAS chances

I think this is my first what are her chances thread. Ever. LOL. But…Penn is a different kind of bird, so please bear with me if I don’t do this correctly and blame me if I do this wrong, she’s a good kid.

D is a rising senior from a relatively small, relatively poor, rural district in Texas. Penn SEAS is the only Ivy college that interests her at all, and her interest is specifically in the Biomedical Science program.

2160 New SAT, 730CR, 740Math, 690W, 32 ACT w/ a 36 Math (both should be 99th percentile for female test takers based on available historical data. These scores are from her first , or only, try at each. She’d like to be done but may retake the ACT because of a unexpectedly but after review richly deserved subpar science score at the 90th percentile.). Currently 1/140, won’t be below 2/140 barring catastrophe. 4.64w,4.0/4.0uw (transcript will not show a B, semester test, final , or 6-weeks)

Toughest courseload available including several college level (and EPGY BC Calc) courses as she has topped out the school curriculum. School only offers two AP’s for junior year, and she has a 4 in Lit and a 5 in AB Calc. She has won 7 best in school awards: for Math (3 times), English (2), Physics (1),and Chemistry (1). (all honors sections, or AP)

4 year Varsity Basketball starter, 2 year Co-captain on Area Championship Team, post season Honors all 4 years. Extensive Summer Basketball experience every year. Camps, showcases, and tournaments with awards.(Not a D1 candidate-bad gene pool.)

Marching Band and Symphonic Band Section and Line Leader on State Ranked Band (2 years officer, member all 4), State Qualifier -UIL Solo and Ensemble as a Tuba Player in a Bass Quartet.

Girl’s State delegate, and minor elected official.

Regional Sixth Place Math UIL Competition (first female) and Math Team Co-captain (2 years)- District Champion (1), 3rd place large Invitational Math Tournament (first female).

Hospital Volunteer (100 hours), community volunteering , school volunteering including tutoring at risk kids and hearing impaired kids for several hundred hours.

Raises sheep and goats of her own for her spending money. Lives on an isolated ranch and performs general ranchhand activities for additional pay. Bottle raises 4-6 orphaned , abandoned, or injured kids, lambs , or fawns /year.

Some un-impressive and sort of boring Student Government, club, or organization stuff that probably won’t make it to the app.

Rec’s should be very good to exceptional, essays will be a challenge.

Wondering how she would be treated at Penn, specifically SEAS. Upenn adcom that D talked to in person felt being a female would be a decent hook at SEAS, as would her rural background. What do y’all think, especially admitted or current Penn students? As I said , Penn is the only school she has of this profile so we really don’t have much of a clue except what the dry numbers and crappy guidebooks say.

I think D has a great chance at penn engineering. Her stats and other activities seem really unique; as long as she has stellar essays, i don't think she'd have a problem. 1 clarification, however: while being a female in engineering is a plus point, it isn't that big a deal for either biomed or chem engg...I'm a female doing chem eng at penn, at half my class is female...in the bioegg gp, more than 50% is female. But I don't think that should make a difference...i still think she has a great chance. good luck:)

Get her some help with the essay process......has she also considered VET School? Either way....Penn is a great place who would welcome such a girl. Be sure the recs are great.....not just good....pick carefully.

hazmat and the r, I appreciate the responses. I think D's rec's will satisfy the great "standard", but those essays-well, the r-she will continue to improve, I'm sure.

As far as her stats and ec's , is anything missing or "not up to snuff"? I know things can always be better, but does something look deficient in her profile? I'd rather her know now, while it may be correctable.

Hazmat, my bet is that VET school is NOT in her picture, however she may well be excellent at it. I guess too much familiarity.

The r, with those M/F stats in BioMed and ChemE, and the 75 to 25 ratio cited to D at the info session, that must mean there are ..what? 4 females in the rest of SEAS? LOL. So much for any hook there. The degree plan D is so enamored with is the BAS degree with a minor in Bio or Chem, although -who knows? BME may be her choice, I can't keep up. Y'all seem to change a lot from 17 to 18, don't you?;)

can anyone give me the SEAS ED stat and avg SAT and GPA?

Come on Penn pro's . I'm dying out here on stage. Any suggestions for her to improve her chances? Does she have any chances? I KNOW she is not a lock. Dry numbers tell me she's pretty far from a lock. I need some feedback to pass along from folks that have or are going through this.

Wait , I have an idea.

My nut of a father is making me type this. I am very interested in learning about my chances at Penn SEAS. This kind of information is not something you can get from a guide book, admissions rep or counselor (especially where everyone goes to community college, Baylor, UT or A+M). I read what my dad wrote on my profile and the only thing I would add is that I took all the APs my school offers last year and will only have the chance to take one more. I know that 3 APs compared to 11 won't look good, but what can I say, poor prior planning (I could have studied for the tests myself). Anything you have to add would really help. Thank you so much in advance.

research biomed science and the program at penn A LOT so you can show your knowledge in your essay. you need to approach your essay with an attitude like "_______ is what i intend on doing and penn will help me reach this goal through its ______ ." i got into SEAS mech. engr. as a sophomore transfer because they have a product design emphasis that i like. drawing/painting/design is a huge extracurricular for me (i took 400 level art classes during my freshman year as an engineering student at my previous university) and so i had my studio professor send in one of my recs to show how i intend on bridging design and engineering at penn. just a thought. if you have any questions i.m. me mdford86. good luck!

poke come to penn. play tuba in the band. We'll be your best friend, I promise. :)

You should definitely apply if you think the school is a good match. I dunno anything about SEAS, but the extracurricular existence at Penn is wonderful. And the band is awesome. We're really laid back, and saying you want to join the band looks good on applications (but only if you then come and join the band)

curmudgeon-about there being like 4 girls in the rest of SEAS, that's almost true...exaggerated but nearly there...not too many girls in mech, electrical, materials, or systems. Comp sci has some though.

And also, about your wanting to do a BAS: I don't know what your future plans are, but a lot of people prefer a BSE instead. I was planning a BAS myself, but my academic advisor persuaded me to do a BSE...thing is, a BAS insn't really considered an engineering degree. And since the curriculum for both are the same for 2 years, it rally sucks to work as hard as an engineer, and finally not get any recognition for it. Just my tc;)

"My nut of a father is making me type this."

HAHA
