SEAS chemistry course requirement

I'm an entering freshman, and I noticed that the major I plan on pursuing requires only a "one-semester lecture" of chemistry. Does this mean that I can take 1403 and not take 1404? When I've searched the boards, these two classes are often always lumped together as if they were one course; also, they are both listed in the catalog as part of "General Chemistry," and the catalog makes it seem like you must take both for the 3.5 points. If I'm required to take a one-semester lecture, can I just take 1403?

I actually would like to take Intensive Gen. Chem (I know that Denzera is a huge fan of this) but if I can take just 1403 without 1404 and get the requirement out of the way in the same amount of time, I think I'll choose that route for the sake of the whole adjusting-to-college thing.

I think you could just end up taking 1403, but if you do not want to take more than a semester of chemistry, my suggestion would be to go with Intensive, if only to hedge yourself against a later major switch. Intensive wasn’t too bad last year (albeit with a different professor) and you do have an add-drop period if you find the course too tough.

Nobody has any clue if taking just 1403 can satisfy the one-semester lecture requirement?

From what the bulletin for my year says, it seems that indeed 1403 does satisfy the requirement.

It definitely means C1403 is enough. A lot of guys I knew who majored in electrical, computer, etc. took 1403 and didn’t take the second semester. For example, see:
