Seas: how did you pick a minor, and core req classes.

dont flame...these are serious questions, if you have criticism make it constructive.

I went through the bulletin for the 3rd time and I am setting p my schedule so I could have some idea when I see my advisor.

1: On the humanities core req it says I can take huma, contemp civs, any two major cultures sequence {what does that mean intro to asian studies?}, or a list A req and a list b or C in the same culture. Pg 11 on bulletin. Can i double dip and have my humanities count towards a minor too.. if I take a major culture sequence.

2: Music hum vs art hum. Ive beena cellist for 8 years and I love music; however, I also love art. How did you all choose. I am not great with music theory and would like to give my priority to my engineering classes.

What is the relative difficulty level of the professional courses. I am also at a lost as o what I would want to choose: Cien E1201y Design of buildings bridges and space craft...GRAP E1115x or y engineering graphics....Mece E1001x Much engineering micro machines to jumbo jets....Msae E1001y Atomic scale engineering of new m materials. I have tried culpa but could not find it. I am looking at getting into structural/ aerospace/mech eng not sure about nano.

4: how does the Uni Witing and gateway work ppl said its decided on alpha order

I know 5 is a scattered question but i am open to ppls suggestions or past experience. I know everyone says you will change your mind on blah blah, but I am set on wnating to design and build things (technology, alternate propulsion etc) so im lookign at mech/aerospace for under grad/masters...or Mech/business for better chance to get into management for engineering teams...or Mech/ law for intellectual property.

5: Minors...is it easier to get a minor that is related to your field ie Mech eng major and civil eng minor? Or can i do something separate. Is it more diff to minor in seas than in a cc course?

Im interested in
Ancient studies, anthropology, asian studies, Chinese, Economics, philosophy,, psychology, sociology.

I am looking at law and intellectual property after my engineering:

Structures of society: history, poli sci, eco, stats, anthropology
Tradition, universal thought,Trends that influence humanity: Philosophy, lit arts, foreign lang,
Human behavior: psychology, sociology

Seas minors: Civil, Financial eng for business background, IEOR....

bud, you should be asking your adviser these questions when you get on to campus in the fall, and current students you meet the first few weeks (things change even from Denzera’s time to now in these departments). some people might be able to answer some of these questions, but they would need to know more about you. so a lot of this is speculative. yes you have ‘real questions’ that probably will alter your latter choices, but that is precisely why CC is a bad place to ask them. i know you are most likely excited/confused/scared, but the anonymity of CC isn’t going to help alleviate your concerns. patience bud, y’all start like in a month or something. you can ask your questions to a real perosn then.

but to start…i can answer some process questions.

1) yes.
2) not an engineer, but you can also take both if you want and can.
3) not an engineer.
4) yes, you got it - unless you live in the gateway suite in LLC and you will work with other folks in your suite.
5) it all depends on you.

Thanks; “i know you are most likely excited/confused/scared”
I am extremely excited about Columbia, and bored … job pickings are slim…i deal with excitement and anticipation by planning.ll you dont want to see my list for my future laptop…

I realize most cant answer this on a personal lvl for me but I am wondering if anyone has been through it in the recent years. I am trying to learn from ppls past mistakes or knowledge.

which floor is the gateway initiative in the llc…im thinking im in it b/c all of the ppl ive talked to on in my hartley suite is seas.

woah i’m from texas too and i’m in hartley and apparently my floor is an engineering floor… 8th

wow pat i believe im your roomate and friend hahaha lol. this is Sol “irrefutable logic is logic qualified to infinity” if you dont know what im talking about disregard it lol. You must be patty! room

actually after reading your posts on cc im not so sure. but either way add me im on the hartley facebook : name overposter to “that floor 8 is pumpin with maple syrup”

yes (I think, I dont’ think you can use major classes to satisfy minor unless it’s an absolute requirement for both, but again, I’ve no clue)

taking music hum next sem, so i cant say much

Engineering Graphics is I think the easiest, but pick the one that interest you.

First half of alphabet have UW first semester, second half Gateway first sem. The only exception being if you are in the LLC Gateway thing, you’ll have Gateway first semester regardless of your last name.

Yes. A minor in seas can be just as difficult as a minor in cc, so it’s all dependent on you. In general, if you are in seas, then a seas minor can be easier because some classes might overlap.

thanks nox for 4 and 5…im sure my advisor and current students i meet will help me decide on 5. as for the gateway res. what floor is that on? in the llc hartley.
[Columbia University Division of Student Affairs](Residential Communities | Columbia College and Columbia Engineering)
i could not find that info. Seems really interesting if you get to meet officials and other ppl involved in engineering and alumni

"woah i’m from texas too and i’m in hartley and apparently my floor is an engineering floor… 8th "

do you know that the floor 8 is for sure engineering floor?

no dorm floors are pure CC or pure SEAS except by total accident.

if you’re a musician, music hum will be a nice way to round out your knowledge of music history. both music hum and art hum really are history classes, going through the “classics” and making sure you can talk intelligently about them.

I took bridges, buildings and spacecraft, and was a little disappointed. the spacecraft part of it got way shortchanged, it was just a guest lecture at the end. we were calculating compression forces in various buildings for like half the course, it was pretty easy for anyone who’s halfway decent at physics. probably would’ve preferred something more rigorous.

I ended up minoring in something that was a secondary interest for me (CompSci), which doubled as a career fallback (i.e., if all else fails I can get a job programming somewhere). I wouldn’t think really hard about a minor until your sophomore year is ending and you’ve picked a major. Most minors are pretty easy to accomplish with the schedule flexibility you have your last two years.

What i have learned from this thread

1: humanities major cultures circuit can double dip to towards minor as long as its a req for both, i should ask advisor for clearance.

2: Music and art hum, is more of a history class…And to compliment my musical background music humanities would be good but either way does not matter.

I should ask around while at Columbia in the first semester to see which one i would like to take in the second sem.

4: i will get gateway most likely

5: I should start thinking of minors at the end of first year and over summer. It is not too hard to minor as long as im diligent.

mk that wraps it up thanks a lot.

sorry i’m confused… how is llc gateway different from just gateway? granted you have to take it first semester. forced to be with llc-ers?

From what I read, in LCC gateway, you’re living with all the people in your gateway group, which will not be the case with normal gateway.
