I am more than willing to work hard but math and science do not come easy to me. I struggled through calculus in high school. I got an A, but I was difficult for me. Chemistry was the same story. I'm in CC but thinking of transferring over to SEAS because I feel like a degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering will be more useful than sociology. Will I survive, or will I be slaughtered by a bunch of mathematical geniuses?

you can’t possibly get through electrical without some serious crazy math, and you will be slaughtered in EE. Not sure about comp sci, doesn’t seem doable without excellent math skills. If you want to be useful do poli sci or econ in the college. Nothing other than Math, Physics, stats, and perhaps chem are as math intensive as the least math intensive major in seas (probably EEE). So anything else in the college probably fits you. Sociology to engineering is a pretty epic jump across the spectrum of skills you need to succeed.

Yes, I realize it is a massive change. The majors you listed are indeed more useful, but I find computers and technology interesting which is why I was considering going in that direction specifically. I’m just not sure how realistic it is for me.

what year are you in? if you’re not a sophomore it’s either too early or too late to be making the switch, if you are a first year, take your time to really think about what you want.

Also it’s good that you are thinking about ability to succeed and not just some going on some unfounded major fetish, which is how half of Columbia chooses what they want to study.

I am a sophomore so I need to get my act together.

^yeah, I think some of the comp sci tracks can be low math intensive, so you could transfer to seas and do comp sci without having to deal with too much math other than calc 3 (which is very doable). As a sophmore you should knowish what you want and I think you have enough time to complete your seas major in comp sci, but act quickly and change classes right now if you have to.
