Displays from the various departments will be featured.

For those interested in BME, there will be tours at MR5, our building at the med school. That building is not usually seen on the typical engineering tour. If anyone is interested in attending the open house, the general admissions info session is at 1100 or 1200, which is typically worthwhile. The BME tour takes one to 1.5 hours, so keep that in mind.

Just wanted to say it was a great event today! My D and I enjoyed it and she is sold on UVA, hopefully UVA feels the same way come April! It also solidified that mechanical engineering is what she wants - she really enjoyed the chem and materials labs but walked into the metronics lab and came alive!

Thanks to you and your daughter for coming. There seemed to be a fairly good turnout considering the cold weather and little publicity – we had about 150 in my BME group yesterday.

do you know if another one of these events is in the works later down the road? I really wanted to come to this but oral surgery got in the way. :(

D also missed the event last year which was unfortunate. We visited a few weeks later (before she was accepted) and had an excellent tour of the e-school - during Days on the Lawn for accepted students there will also be some great opportunities to see the facilities (at least to my recollection).

The Open House is an annual event. There are tours all the time, however, and I bet that if you have an interest, a visit to a particular lab could be arranged by calling one of the departments.

Tours of the e-school run Mon-Saturday at 1pm. Email the engineering school office if you want to schedule at a different time, the tours are run by a student group and we make special arrangements often, without a hassle. I highly suggest doing a SEAS tour, I’m a tour guide myself and I know every single parent/applicant walks away with not only a better grasp on the e-school, but college in general. The tours are often small (1-5 families) and personal.

I’ll definitely be going down the visit the e-school soon then.

Also, I’ve been wondering about the similarities and differences of the e-schools at Vtech and UVA. I visited both schools last year and loved UVA, but didn’t really like Vtech in general. Now I get a lot of harp for wanting to go to UVA for engineering rather than tech because tech is ranked higher. However I have no basis for my reasoning other than that I like the school itself in general more. Anyone care to elaborate more on the engineering school?

Dunno about VT, but I’m going to med school next year, so SEAS worked out well for me.

Most importantly, my mom said she can’t go out in public if my Class of 2014 sibling ends up at VT (accepted at VT but has an app pending at UVa, as well as other schools).

jchartier, do some searching for some of Shoebox10’s past posts. She went to Tech and transferred to UVa. I think her take on the UVa vs. Tech discussion is best, since she has first hand experience at both schools.

I have one child in engineering at Tech and one who found out yesterday he is accepted at Tech but is waiting to hear from UVA. Both love Tech and the kids, but my son really wants UVA engineering. There is a lot to be said for a smaller program and teachers that want to be there and you can understand. My child at Tech basically got a group together and they teach themselves. I do appreciate Tech letting kids know early this year with the economy and so. Tech has let most people know this week if they are in. Great for spring break visits. If they have reviewed your file I don’t see why they don’t just let you know. Wish UVA did that.

We work as quickly as we can while still being thorough in a holistic process.

Our staff is extremely small and hasn’t grown much despite a tremendous jump in applications on recent years. I read from about 6 AM until 11 PM (look at the times of my posts to the blog, this forum) most weekdays and for at least 3-5 hours on weekend days. We work at a breakneck pace.

I would love to get our process done earlier, but in light of the limited resources we have, it can’t be done without using shortcuts (meaning cut offs for rank or testing, doing away with essays, recs, and other subjective parts of the application). I wouldn’t be comfortable with that sort of process.

Keep in mind that VT doesn’t require essays. My sibling didn’t write one and was told that the latest round of acceptance there were for nearly all honors-eligible students, not the typical applicant.

caity, I’m also in the same situation as your son. I was admitted to vtech last week and now am “patiently” waiting for a decision from UVA. looks like ill fill some of the time by looking through Shoebox10’s post.

While I’d love to go into the VT/UVA discussion, it is easier to just search for my posts. They’ll be around 2/07 to 3/08, I did a lot of talking during then.
Key things? UVa is more holistic in its engineering (more writing, other classes in College), smaller, and I think a better location. VT is highly regarded across the board, more engineering majors, and a BIG Div-I ACC school.
As far as rankings go, ignore them. Both engineering schools are good, and while VT beats UVA in engineering, UVa is the #2 public school in the country.

I was walking down the street today thinking about this. I realized, that in my fourth year, final semester of college, and I am really happy that I transferred. I love UVa with all of my heart and I couldn’t imagine my life without being here.
If anyone is interested in tour, PM me and let me know what date you’re planning. I’ll make sure I give the tour if I can =D
