I know there are many threads focused on this, but I would just like to get some insight on which school to attend. I am majoring in Marine Science, which is offered by both schools. So, does it even matter which school I choose? Will choosing SEBS give me a better chance of being on Cook campus (where the marine science lab is)? Any information will be appreciated.

Anyone?..

SEBS is a smaller school and will likely get you better research opportunties. Housing is up to you - you could be enrolled in SEBS and elect to live on College Ave or Livingston. I don’t know anything about the SAS Marine Science major - I would look at the other required courses from each school, ie/ SAS may require a foreign language, whereas SEBS does not.

sas is a pretty broad school, so you’d end up taking elective requirements that you may not need or like. sebs seems more specialized from what you said about the marine science lab.

housing on cook will be very easy to get, considering that it is undesirable to non-sebs students. even if you aren’t in sebs, people who apply for housing really late get placed on cook/douglass or livingston. if you are in sebs, most of your classes would be on cook so it would be more convenient to live there.

hey! i’m an incoming freshman majoring in marine bio, i had the same problem as you and went with SEBS. I did it for the same reasons as above, it seems like SAS is very broad, and SEBS seems more focused on my major.

What makes Livingston so undesirable Drexeler? I picked Busch as my first choice for this reason.

the dorms on livingston aren’t the best quality. you will stay in the lynton towers for summer orientation and will see for yourself. it isn’t air-conditioned, and in general, it just feels like a prison cell.

on the other hand, i live on busch (barr hall), and the quality of the dorm couldn’t be any better. it’s air-conditioned and carpeted, plus it feels more cozy than the quads and towers on livingston. the dining hall on busch is much bigger and has more variety, but livi’s getting a nice new one. you will notice that there’s a big difference in quality between dining halls (busch and cook/douglass are the best ones).

for me, busch is also more convenient. i’m an engineering major, and a lot of my courses are math and science. just about all of my classes have been on busch so it works out nicely.

if you have any more questions about the dorms or campuses i can answer them :)

Thanks for the replies drexler. I like cook cuz of the rural feel and that the lab is there. One question, are the general classes offered on each campus? General as expos, chem, bio, the things everyone had to take. Will they only be offered on one campus? I was just wondering cuz I know many people need to take these each semester so maybe there are multiple classes on different campuses?

Thanks

yes, you’ll be able to get gen. ed. classes on cook or douglass (which are right next to each other, so there’s really no difference). you can choose whatever campuses you want your classes on, but when it’s cold, snowy and icy it’s nice to have everything on your home campus :)

Thanks for the info Drexeler, just a few more questions ;)

How is college ave? Is it a party atmosphere 24/7? Is it dirty? Clean? How is the food, etc…?

Do incoming freshmen usually get Busch or Livingston?

I will be going to the business school. From what I gathered most of the classes will be on Livingston. How long is the commute from Busch to Livingston?

Any idea what the male/female ration is for the business school?

Thanks again!

College Ave is the only completely urban campus at rutgers nb (douglass is on the edge of new brunswick, and cook is more toward east brunswick). busch and livi are in piscataway township. Because the other campuses are more suburban, the only place to party is at - college ave. during the day college ave is like any other city, but at night it is party central. by dirty, do you mean the dorms or the city itself? it really depends where you are, because some parts of new brunswick are nice and manicured, but other areas are a little trashy. the majority of on-campus crimes/muggings occur on college ave, but this only happens if you’re walking around alone at night. the dining hall is not the best, but there are plenty of other dining options like the student center and other restaurants. fat sandwiches are really good :)

freshman are everywhere. it all depends on when you applied for housing. livingston is the campus that freshman don’t want to be on, but they got stuck there anyway (livi is mostly freshman, and some upperclassmen and transfers). but you’re a business major, so i’m sure you’ll meet lots of business majors if you end up there! there’s also a brand new dining hall for next year. busch is a pretty good mix between freshman and upperclassmen, there’s also graduate student housing so it’s a pretty big mix.

yes, livingston is where the business school is concentrated. getting from busch to livingston is pretty quick- about 10-15 minutes is ideal.

i’m not sure about the ratio. it should be pretty evened out.
