Ok, so a while back I did a chances thread, but I apparently did my GPA some strange way and I think it was off...and I forgot to mention quite a few things, I have new schools to consider and I have new AP scores, so let me try again. (please!!!!)

white female from New York
rising senior
public high school...not one of those "very very competitive best in country schools" but it's still good

-don't know class rank until next year, but definitely top 10% of class, maybe top 5% but I don't know...I think I am.....but I'm not psychic.....all I know is there's 276 in my class.....

Intended major: physics

my psat was:
cr:64
m:67
w:65

SAT: 2080 (first try)
580 CR ,770 Math,730 Writing
as you can see I'm gonna retake for that CR score...perhaps in the 600's next time? in other words, CR will be my life for the next 2 months until I get that score up!

SAT II's:
Math II- 750
Physics- 630
gotta retake the physics one too, I took it without having learned mostly any of the material so this time I'm getting the physics teacher to teach me the material first (he said he would)- there's a reason he said we shouldn't take this....so glad I listened

*I have been taking all honors/AP courses...got A's in every class. except for the required ones like health and art (although I still got A's, just not weighted) which there was no advanced art classes available until I took AP art.

*I don't know what my GPA is but my averages have ranged from 91-98, with my two lowest averages being in AP classes (the 91's) so they're pretty much all gonna be weighted, I just don't know the "right way" to calculate this.

AP Classes:

sophomore:
AP World History (4)

junior:
AP Studio Art: Drawing (3)
AP English Language (5)
AP US History (3)

senior:
AP English Literature
AP Government
AP Italian
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
AP Biology (I would have taken AP art: 2-D instead but it didn't fit in my schedule)
AP Physics (self study)

EC's:
-Mathletes (9-12), co-president this year and next year
-Art Club (9-12) treasurer this year
-Chess Club (11-12), probably vice-president next year
-Science Olympiads (11-12)
-Talented and Gifted Program at school (9-12)
-currently in Junior National Honor Society (9-11), next year will be in National Honor Society (12)

Awards:
-RPI Medalist (for excellence in math and science)
-American Math Competition 12 School High Scorer
-School high scorer in Senior High Mathletes
-1st place in New York State in Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State poster contest (it's like linking math and art...like I actually use both sides of my brain.....)
-Foreign language poster contest 1st place in school one year, 2nd place the next year (poster contests are my thing)
-2nd place in school pi memorizing competition for 2 years in a row..lost to my brother both times :P (strange but come on, I <3 pi)
-perfect attendance grades 10-11....I don't think that counts for anything!

Volunteer:
-Office assistant at church for religion classes every Sunday (9-12)
-Volunteer at Vacation Bible School at church in arts n' crafts, also dedicate a few weeks before decorating and setting up for this(9-12)

-I tutored someone in math and physics this year...but I got paid...so I don't know if I should put that down

I know my EC's and stuff are dreadfully short, but it's all I've got!

So should I even bother trying to get into:
*MIT (I know I'm gonna get a lotta "rejects" for this one, and I'm not being hopeful about getting in, trust me)
*Columbia (another reject, of course...)
*NYU
*Stevens Institute Of Technology
*Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
*Fordham
*Polytechnic University
*New York Institute of Technology
*St. John's
*CUNY Queens College

How many digits of pi do you know? That will determine your admissions outcomes.

lol....232. Do you think I should lock myself up in a room for a few months and get that up to 1000?

This is depressing. maybe I should chance myself......ok....so self, I think you will be rejected everywhere. Anyone else?

You're depressing me. Why the dismal attitude? Tell yourself that you have a fighting chance; otherwise, it is certain that you won't get accepted.

MIT is a stretch. You could pull yourself within reach if you present yourself in a unique way. Are you really good at art? Send an art supplement to distinguish yourself from the hundreds/thousands who will be sending research abstracts. Make yourself the math/science girl with the watercolor/painting skillz, whatever.

You have good scores, but others will have much better. Definitely retake the Physics SAT. Try to get it to at least 770+.

Now: do you really want to major in physics? Is this your passion? Will colleges looking at your scores and ECs perceive that physics is your passion? Will MIT think that you can handle the courseload? After all, some freshman year physics courses dish out problem sets where the average problem can keep you up all night (according to an RSI alumnus, no less). Know yourself, and know your schools.

Anyway, apologies for the lecture. You have a fair chance. Tell yourself so.

Incidentally, apart from Columbia and MIT, everything is a match or safety. Good luck.

As for digits of pi, you have me beaten. I *only know about 100.

Thanks for that! MIT will doubt i can handle the courseload i think...(I'm too negative still)..i dont know if anyone from my school's ever made it in there! (maybe like 30 years ago but i don't know)
