second bachelor's degree at nyu

Hi,
Let me introduce myself. I am a Spaniard who emigrated to the US two years ago, namely NY.
I hold a BSc in industrial engineering from my country. After giving much thought on it, I have decided that I’d like to study computer science with maths as a major in an undergraduate program. NYU offers this, at Courant.
I have been told and read, to my surprise, that they don’t accept applicants pursuing a second degree. I just cannot find the logic in this, but this is how it is, right? I have heard that what some foreign people do to circumvent this issue, is not to show or apply as someone with already a bachelor’s. Is this common practice? should I take this path? or you’d say it is a better idea to stick to other universities where a second degree pursuant is considered? Don’t they make a research thorough enough to discover that these people already have a degree, and blacklist them?
Many thanks

First of all, you are asking if a deliberate dishonesty is acceptable. Do you expect us to say yes??

Second, if you really want to know if NYU doesn’t offer 2nd degree, why not just ask?

Third, even if you get away with it and gets a bachelor’s degree, if anyone finds out your bachelor will be completely nullified.

Just find a school that offers 2nd degree.

Right. Lying is unworthy of anyone past the age of reason-- that’s generally accepted as 7.

If the information you’ve received is true, then NYU isn’t the right school for you. There are plenty of schools in and near NYC, and I cannot imagine that NYU is the only one-- or the cheapest-- offering that particular course of study.

Lying and cheating is not the way to conduct your professional or personal life.

Right, thanks for your prompt response and honesty. I agree with you, I just felt I was the only foreigner out there trying to be honest, while lots of other made the trick, and this really made me feel like an idiot. I would’ve never even considered this, but the chance (long-shot chance) of entering Courant was really appealing, getting the opportunity to study what I couldn’t when I was teenager at a top-notch university near home.

Anyway, you wouldn’t be eligible for financial aid as second degrees aren’t eligible for aid. And its impossible to pay NyU 'out or pockets since they’re so expensive. Your best bet is to find a certificate or program through CUNY (the cheapest option for NYC residents) then go for a master’s degree.

“lots of others”? Who are you talking about?

Look for this kind of program:

Why not a masters program?

@paul2752 lots (some) of others foreigners I have heard of that have done this. mainly coming from Caribbean countries.

@TQfromtheU Two reasons:

  1. My engineering degree has nothing to do with computer science, so I feel like I wouldn’t get enough profit from a master’s degree in CS without the previous knowledge related. I don’t want to enter a master’s degree and feel like they are talking to me in Japanese because of my lack of foundation.
  2. I feel quite rusty right now, since some time has passed from the last time I opened a math book. Doing the whole bachelor’s degree would put me back on track.
That being said I am open to a master’s degree if other options are not viable.

@vonlost thanks, I will sure take a look at the online degrees, which are also way cheaper.
