Second Bachelor's vs First Master's

Hello,

BACKGROUND:

I am a recent college graduate (24 years old) with no work experience, outside of minor part-time student-job experience. To make a long story short, I have searched very extensively for a job over the past few months and have so far been very unsuccessful in attracting attention. For multiple reasons, I had to take summer classes instead of internships. My undergraduate major was Business / Management Information Systems. I graduated with a VERY high GPA (both overall and major), among the top of my class. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I attended a university that has absolutely zero reputation or name recognition (not even within the state) beyond its AACSB-Accreditation. So between that and no internships, the job search has been terrible.

I have begun strongly considering returning for a new degree, and this time absolutely doing internship(s) at one of the schools on a short list of much more reputable public universities in my current state. I am going to study very hard to score as high as I can on the GMAT and apply to Master of Science in MIS programs (not MBAs, I realize the top schools require strong work experience, and besides, I do not wish to "use" that card yet).

However, after reading countless listings for supposedly entry-level and/or recent-college-graduate jobs, I noticed that most of even the least technical seemed to prefer Computer Science majors (and/or the advanced level of technical skill they normally possess). During school, I actually began to regret my decision to major in MIS instead of Computer Science, but only after I was too far into the business curriculum to change without significantly delaying graduation (maybe I still should have done so if I was able to see the future). I would prefer jobs that are more on the business/analytical side of technology, but it seems CS majors have the advantage there too from what I can tell, or employers want MIS majors specifically from top schools, as with most other business degrees.

QUESTION:

I have not/do not/will not have an expensive lifestyle after graduation, but I do have (and will have more) student loans that I need to pay. Hence, why I am only considering in-state public schools, though reputable ones. To pay off these loans I obviously need a decent job after graduation. What are your opinions:

Will an MS in MIS, from a reputable school, break me out of this situation of needing experience/skills to get experience/skills?

Or would it be a better idea to spend 2.5 years, as opposed to just 1.5 years for a Master's, to obtain a second Bachelor's, this time in Computer Science, from one of those schools?

If you have an opinion, I would appreciate if you could explain why you have that opinion.

Thank You!

I don’t have really any advice for you that I can offer but I am in almost the exact situation as you. Went to a state school and majored in business management and now I can’t get a job to save my life unless I want to do sales or customer service. I am also considering going back to school but for an MS in accounting. I too considered further education in MIS but, just like you, I discovered that most of the ideal candidates are going to be computer science or software engineering undergrads. All I can say is good luck! tough competitive world…
