Second Centruy STEM Scholarship and Madison Award

I am curious if anyone has heard anything regarding the Second Centruy STEM Scholarship?

Also, I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the Madison Award.

No Madison Award for my DS. He was asked to apply but got his denial letter about a week ago.

Anyone receive any recent news?

My son received a preliminary Madison Award offer via email from a department head on Thursday, March 28. He replied he was interested and we are awaiting the next step. There were no details yet $$$ wise, but he is super excited (as are we)!

Thanks for the info! I wish him luck!! Keep us posted.

Did anyone receive an email about a Presidential Recognition Award? Is that the same as Madison Awards?

@colleen4250 My S received an email today. I don’t think it was the Madison Award since it was only 5K/yr. I wish they had sent this award sooner.

@Propinquity4444 yes, thank you. I was very confused because the agreement says the award is needbased yet it wasn’t mentioned in the aid package they gave me a while ago and the award was given by the financial aid office not department chairs as I thought Madison Awards were. I am very interested in attending JMU since they are a public school that takes many of my credits and I was admitted to the Honors College but the cost right now is only a few thousand less than the cost of other private schools after grants. The merit aid I receive from JMU, because I didn’t apply to Dingledine, will determine whether I go there or to Villanova so I hope Madison Awards are separate.

Has anyone else received an email?

Update: Yesterday, my son received his Madison award letter in the mail to sign, accept, and return. It did not state an amount. He also received an email this morning saying he was on the wait list for Second Century with no guarantee to move up by May 1st or at all. Fine by us, as scholarships can’t overlap and we did not expect anything in the first place. He sent in his deposit a couple of weeks ago, so his decision has been made.

Wow! it will be hard to compare to other schools if amounts still are not available this late next year. Sounds like I have some expectations management to do.

Do you mind sharing his stats @ClassicMom98 ?

@Cheeringsection

In-state/Intelligence Analysis Major
SAT 1410
GPA 4.0 UW, 4.5+ Weighted
Top 1% of class
15-20 AP/Dual Enrollment
Very strong ECs in sports, youth mentoring, academic
Soccer ref for 6 years
No minority status/personal struggle to overcome. No need based aid.
Lives in an economically distressed area. HS is ranked at the bottom of the state.

I don’t remember what rec letters they got, but his 4H Director wrote a great one focusing on his non-academic qualities. However, his favorite teachers are not STEM teachers. The one he asked for Second Century had to be prompted several times and had not completed it the morning of the deadline.

I love my son and think he is amazing, but I did not expect anything. His older brother had more “WOW” stats and was not overwhelmed with merit scholarship offers. Granted, he did apply to tougher schools and wound up with a nice package at a school that fits him well. But, it was an eye opener for us. After watching his brother, my younger son seemed to step up his game. He was always a smart kid, but his attitude toward school changed significantly. He took it more seriously and just cared more. It’s been a great three years watching him mature and seeing some reward for his effort.

Good luck to you/your kid!

Thank you for sharing that information @ClassicMom98. He sounds like an amazing young man! He will be a wonderful addition to JMU.

We are OOS and understand what those costs will be without need based aid or merit aid but we are hoping DD20 will qualify for some merit aid to preserve some funds for grad school. We will see how it shakes out and hope for the best.

@Cheeringsection FYI - he was notified today that he received $6008/year. So it seems that they notify recipients of the award in mid April. Once you accept and they receive the form, then they will let you know the amount.

Congratulations ??! Worth the wait!

Last second Madison Award came through today (last day). Full in state Tuition estimated at $12,000. My daughter is OOS, 1260 SAT, 3.7/4.2 gpa IB student. Also will be playing soccer for JMU!

Congratulations to your DD @Soccerfan53 ! That had to be a great surprise!!
