second century scholar jmu vs. uva?

I was offered a second century scholar for jmu and honors program, but I was also accepted to uva. Is this even comparable to uva?

What programs are you interested in? I faced the same decision last year, and chose UVA. (I’m in Chemistry).

Wow we are almost the same person! I’m going to major in chemistry as well!

Can I ask why you ended up choosing uva? Right now I am leaning towards uva because it is such an amazing school with an interesting fun city, and since I am instate I will get a great price for either school.

Yeah that is pretty cool! We (parents and I) decided it was worth paying more for the better academic environment (foregoing scholarship money from JMU). I had always loved UVA, so it was definitely a great decision. I wish I could speak for JMU, but UVA is the right fit for me academically; it challenges me everyday, but I love the learning environment, too.

Keep in mind that although rankings are just numbers, they reflect on what kinds of students each school attracts. Basically, it is my belief that there will be a noticeable difference between the academic challenge you get at each university (obviously speaking with half information). I’m sure you’ll do great at UVA if are dedicated to your studies, and therefore I think that you should go for the more “challenging” of the two options. Depends on how finances work out, of course; this is a scholarship we are talking about, which is really cool.

No amount of scholarship money or honors would make JMU a better option than UVA. When finding a job or applying to graduate school, no one outside of Harrisonburg is aware of these “honors”/“scholarships.” All people see on your resume is JMU and that’s enough for them to draw their own conclusions…whatever those may be. Go to UVA.

S was also accepted to both, but to JMU w/ other scholarship. We agree, worth it to go to Uva. JMU is an excellent school (top regionally), but Uva is well respected, world wide, for top academics–worth the cost imo. I had no idea how hard this decision making process would be for my S, and the merit scholarships from other good schools do complicate the process (for us it’s a full tuition offer from top LAC). He’s leaning towards Uva, and we are heading to DOTL, but it’s hard to say no to the other offer when it’s a school he really loves too. I can understand your struggle given the economy, but Uva would be my choice btw. the two. Hope you can go to DOTL and find clarity. Stepping foot on that campus will most likely seal the deal for you!

I’m not accepting the offer for jmu, I just can’t see myself there. Uva or william and mary here I come!

Same dillema…same scholarship and same major even! I’m leaning towards JMU though. I toured their chemistry department and the faculty, students, equipment, and research the undergrads get to undertake was very impressive. I figure it might be better to shine in undergrad and put myself in debt later with graduate school than go to a slightly better school for undergrad!

UVa is not slightly better than JMU. It is MUCH better.

turner050, It sounds like you are really thinking this all through. That’s a good thing. Finances are an important consideration if you’re planning on grad school.Good luck to you at either JMU or UVa. Both great schools.

Is it easy to do research at uva? That’s what I’m worried about. I’m not an echols or science scholar, and I’m afraid that with all the competition I won’t get to do research.

And you think that at JMU you will have the chance to?

Yes, I’m almost positive that at jmu I wouldd be able to do research. Being a second century scholar holds a lot of weight and can open many doors at the university.

There are lots of ways to do research at UVa. :)
