Since you have to rank dorms 1-6, I was curious as to whether the triple choices or single choices should be picked after doubles. I feel that it may be harder to make friends with a single, but I'd rather not be the odd one out in a triple. Also, for someone who has no drinking experience but may want to drink a little (conservatively) in college, would choosing non-substance free be a wise choice? I'm not uncomfortable around people who drink, but I'd rather not be in a party 24/7 zone. At the same time, I don't want an antisocial floor.

And yes, I have searched; I didn't find the exact answers I'm looking for. Thanks!

I am not sure what to tell you about this. 2 years ago, my D got her 6th (of 6) choice! She petitioned Res Life and did get her room changed before freshman year started. Some dorms (at least her freshman year) were totally substance free and some were substance free by floor. Maybe you would be happiest on a substance free floor in a dorm that had both types of floors. D’s final dorm was that way and she was very happy. She liked being on a subfree floor in that she is not a drinker and didn’t care to partake, but she said for those who did choose to, all they had to do was “walk up the stairs one floor!”

just to clarify, I dont think getting your 6th choice is the norm… I am relatively sure that 2 years ago, more students enrolled than WashU expected, so there was a housing crunch. It has all been smoothed over by now though. Sorry OP, no actual advice coming from me-- I start freshman year this fall.

Honestly, I highly doubt it’s possible to get a single as an incoming freshman so I wouldn’t worry about how you rank it too much.

As for your other question, I’m not a WashU student yet (will be transferring from William& Mary for Fall 09), but I would highly suggest you take a regular floor from experience. Especially since you are fine around people that do drink. I would only suggest sub-free to people who absolutely cannot tolerate it. In college, naturally drinking is a social event that brings people together. Not saying that you have to partake, but it’s always fun to hang out with people whether you’re going to drink or not. From what I have heard and from personal experience, regular floors seem to be the best option judging by your original post. It’s WashU, it’s not going to be a party 24/7 like some state schools since everyone cares about academics so much. If you happen to get a floor full of people who party all the time, theres nothing wrong with locking yourself in your room for awhile or heading out to the library if you need to get stuff done.

I’m not quite sure what the above poster is talking about…I am a freshman and have a single, along with quite a few other people on my floor. I actually really like it. I don’t think making friends is a problem. Freshman floors are social places. I would go for a regular floor. I don’t drink, and I don’t live on a sub-free floor, and it’s not a big deal.

I’m sorry scwymer. That’s amazing, at most places it’s tough for even an upper-classman to get a single

Thanks for all of the responses. scwymer, are you in a traditional single or a modern single? I’m probably going to go for a regular floor; I think I’ll survive. Still a toss up between single & triple…

its never predictable, and there will definitely be some “party floors” in the non sub-free dorms, and some “antisocial” floors in both types. From my experience, sub-free is totally the way to go, I went into my freshman year in a very similar situation. I’d say 75% of the freshmen on my floor drank, but it was so nice not to have loud parties next door when I really needed to spend a saturday night studying. My floor was very social though, and we’d go out to parties together. Like MidwestParent’s comment, I think it’s easy to go find a party, but harder to get away from them.

Ditto to THEA… it’s all relative, it’s WashU, not a crazy party school. You’ll do fine either way, and don’t be too worried about it.

Question: are there sub-free modern dorms (like 4 to a bathroom style)?

mike: yes- I know at least 3 modern freshmen dorms that have sub-free floors.

THEAjay89: sorry, no need to apologize to me! all my friends at other schools say the same thing. didn’t mean to sound annoying in my post.

mike1123: traditional. freshman modern singles are more difficult to come by, although they do exist.

I think each freshman dorm has one sub free floor this year. Used to be that there was only one dorm entirely substance free. That changed with this year’s freshman class.
