Second degree at Stony Brook for economics!

Hello all,

I applied for a second degree at Stony Brook University. My first degree was in History, and Women's and Gender Studies. I really liked those fields, but something always felt not right about them. Looking back I would always try to twist almost everything I worked on into a economic type paper. Sadly, it did not dawn on me to be an economics major at the time. I would really love to complete a bachelor's degree in this field and pursue it further for a PhD in the future. I currently have two degree's an associate's degree with a 3.17 GPA and a Bachelor's degree with a 3.40 GPA that I graduated with departmental honors. The bachelor's degree is from Stony Brook University, so I am not sure if that would have any influence for me getting into another program there. Stony Brook says on their site it can be tougher to get in as a second degree student, due to priority being given to first year students. They also say that your new focus has to be much different than a previous focus, which I feel economics should fit that criteria. The admissions office told me economics was not really a popular major for incoming freshman though. I had already applied, and I hope to get in. Does anyone know if I would have a good shot on getting in?

Thank you all for your time,
K.M.

hmm, well both economics and history are liberal arts subjects, and i think getting another bachelors degree will cost some money. have you considered getting a master in economics directly rather than going back to get an undergrad degree? i just think getting another B. degree will take a lot of money and time.

i should mention that i am a high school senior, so im not the MOST qualified person to give u advice, but i hope you see my reasoning.

I think the fields are very different. I also graduated from Stony Brook, and it is a state school. So that means I would not need to complete 4 years for a bachelors degree, and it is not an expensive school. The second Bachelor’s degree would only take me 2-3 semesters to finish, since I already have most of their general requirements met as well as the math needed for the economics major.

@berryblossom‌ ok, so if it only takes u to 2-3 semesters then go for it. sorry, i didnt answer your question the first time, i forgot this was in the chance’s forum. i thought u were asking something else. sorry, i cant chance u on getting a 2nd bachelors degree.
