Second-guessing my chemical engineer aspirations..

This is my first post so don’t eat me.

The little information so far: I have just completed my sophomore year of high school with a 3.75 GPA (unweighed with AP course multiplier steroids), I consistently excel most in science, (and particularly enjoy chemistry) and have fairly accurate methods and conceptual skills in math. I have been enrolled in drafting and AutoDesk AutoCAD and Inventor engineering classes, but enjoy these less than pure science and math cores.

My first choice in a school was UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering. I am now wondering about UT’s Jackson School of Geosciences.

I was considering ending it at a bachelors, but after reading a few posts on here, a masters began to sound like a pretty investment.

There is a history of geoscience in my family, with strong connections to ExxonMobil. Possible internships with my relations? Where would these internships be most helpful? CE, Geoscience, or business?

I also wonder if I could apply my skills in the business field. I’ve always just turned to engineering because of its integration with science.

Are there any sites or other forums I should be looking into? Recommendations by graduates out there with similar high school emotions?

blaaaargggghh I’m nervous I’ll hate being an engineer D: help!!

Why do you think you will hate it?

Just chill out. You’re honestly thinking way too far in the future- many people’s interests change significantly through high school and even through their first few years of college. Now isn’t the time to decide if you want to get a master’s or not- decide that when you’re actually in college and know what you actually want to do.

Most of all, just pick what you want to do- not what you think is best based on adding up numbers. Both geoscience and chemical engineering have good job opportunities, so you shouldn’t use that to decide. Just go with whatever one you want, and if you decide you don’t like it, change.
