I just read this entire thread, and it's been very helpful! I, too, have been asked to have a second Harvard interview. I was puzzled at first as to why a second one, but now, I'm just going to try my best to rock it!

Best of luck to all of you in this college process! It's an honor in itself to be qualified to apply to such a school =)

Yeah, I was obsessed with finding out why I was asked, but honestly I don't think we'll ever know for sure...

Countryangel, the only option is likelies. I didn't mean rolling in the traditional sense, I meant that they make decisions in waves but don't necessarily inform people. They might also go back and change some of them.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the second interviews weren't really about you at all-but to evaluate the interviewers and see how consistent the reports are; it would be an interesting study to see how valid interviews are...just thinking about this.

Never thought about that before...but couldn't inconsistent reports also be seen as an indication that the candidate is inconsistent with his/her answers?

And also, I'd be kind of mad that Harvard got me all worked up about an interview that really had nothing to do with my application x]

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that Harvard would organize second interviews just to evaluate interviewers. If the reports are detailed, that will probably be a better way to determine quality. If the report is vague, then a second interview can be considered.

Perhaps it's something else altogether: When did you submit your apps? I submitted mine on Dec. 1st. Perhaps they just worked through everyone in my area and took the interviewers who hadn't met quota (per se...the number they normally interview) and just started from the beginning again.

I submitted my app in late November, and my first interview was on Dec. 7th. I live in New York City and would be really surprised if they ran out of people to interview, but that could be the case.

" Perhaps they just worked through everyone in my area and took the interviewers who hadn't met quota (per se...the number they normally interview) and just started from the beginning again."

Absolutely no chance of this. There is no quota for people who are volunteering their time to interview.

Let's see about the other people (the adcom case could be more interesting...). But even in our area, with 200+ applicants, each interviewer covers about 5-6 and everyone gets an interview basically. My second interviewer had only done 4.

i have a second interview but i live in the boston area so its with someone whose a school rep or something of the sort (she works for the Harvard admission office in some capacity).

Well since they have an 80% plus yield, its the first choice of the overwhelming majority of applicants. If I got in I wouldn't go anywhere else.

After reading through this thread, it seems like getting a second interview can't really be a bad thing. But I just got a call from a Harvard interviewer in my area who said she "needs to interview me this weekend." This is not going to be my second interview. Instead, this is going to be my first interview, as I was never contacted for one earlier. I submitted my app in mid-December, so I assumed I wasn't going to get one anyways. Some of the other people in my area who submitted their applications a few days after I did still got interviews in late December - January, but I was never contacted for one. This is also a different interviewer from what I've heard from my other friends who got Harvard interviews. So I'm basically confused as to why the interviewer decided to contact me on a Friday afternoon asking for an interview within the next 2 days. Anyone else get something like this? =/

No, but rhwang, the committee is meeting soon according to my second interviewer. This fits in perfectly with everyone else saying their interviewers wanted interviews in the near future, so that they could submit reports in time. For all I know, the committee is meeting for the first time to make final calls. But they are meeting soon.

It's actually my son's friend who got the email and I am assuming it is another alum interview. We were just wondering what it meant. Thanks Smoda.
