From whom, alicimoo?

Alicimoo, who told you this?

I believe alicimoo, it makes perfect sense. Y else would they need another interview? They must have not been able to come up with a final decision yet.

Would you guys who are getting second interviews mind posting up your stats?

Guidance counselor.

I got a second interview too. they contacted me (through my schools' college office) on tuesday and i had the interview friday morning at the harvard admissions office. my interviewer said not to stress, my first interview was great etc, she just wanted to put a face to the name and there was no real specific reason (she was a little vague). but I think I had the interview because I am a borderline candidate. my grades and test scores aren't on par with harvard's usual standards but there are other extenuating circumstances that could still make me a good candidate. what I was confused about were th eother people they asked to come in from my school. Both were girls, and really smart....one is boring (she brought her mom to the interview!) but the other one is a great kid and has already been accepted EA to yale AND has family connections to harvard so i find it hard to believe she is borderline...

sbarkowski -

Was your experience similar to Harvey33's. He stated that it was only about 30 minutes, and less formal than the first. It also sounded like his was not stressful.

That's amazing that your school had three students all called in for second interviews. How many students from your school applied to Harvard in the first place?

"Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that Harvard would organize second interviews just to evaluate interviewers. "

It's hard enough getting enough alum to interview. It would be a waste of time and effort to have to recruit more alum interviewers just to evaluate how well alums conduct interviews.

Stats?

2400 sat
800/800/800 subjec tests
5s on 6 APs, I've taken most in my grade and school offers no official classes

The only weakness is that my freshman grades are below par; the rest are on the same level as former harvard admits from my school (we have a decent number).

I still am not sure about what your GC said; where is he getting his information?

Years of experience? lol. My school is a top feeder for Harvard.
This year we have about 80 students applying. I believe 6-7 people are getting second interviews.

Okay. That's weird, but at least it's nice to know that my rejection wasn't immediate. :p

Wow, Baelor...your scores are so impressive!!!

My stats:
2320 SAT (superscore)
740/720/640 subject tests (not great I know)
APs: 4 and 5 (currently taking 3 more this year; took as many as my school would let me...it doesn't sound like a lot, but we take college courses during senior year so less AP courses are offered...but every non-AP class is honors level)

I was rejected from Yale EA so I didn't have high hopes, but with the second interview...well, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed!

smoda61-
my interview was very relaxed but a little over an hour. and I go to a new england prep school, so almost everyone applies to harvard (there are 170 kids in the senior class and I would say at least 130 applied, but i'm not sure because students don't like to tell people their lists).

last year 16 kids went to harvard (38 from 06-08). my college counselor told me sometimes only a few will be asked for a second interview and sometimes up to ten will, it varies every year.

and annasmith (or anyone else reading this thread)
don't be discouraged or anything about scores because 1) grades are more important and 2) your a lot more than your scores (my scores sucked but both my interviewers were adamant about the fact that you couldn't learn the world from a book...my second interviewer raved about my essays though and loved that i knew how to balance school, family, and work with being a regular kid)

Scores are definitely not make-or-break. Essays, teacher recs, and extra curriculars can really make you stand out when your scores are lackluster.

Sbarkowski - Very interesting and very different experience. D is in a public school w/ 184 in the graduating class. She is one of three applying to Harvard this year. We are not aware of any other second interviews. During the time that I have paid attention to our HS's acceptances (4 years since S's applications) only 1 student has been admitted to Harvard and she was a recruited athlete.

D's second interview is Monday on-campus during the predicted snowstorm. What great timing!

D's basic stats:

ACT 35 (better score than SAT)
SAT II Math II 790, Bio M 780, Math I 740, Chem 720
4.0/4.0 uw
rank 1/184
APs Bio(5), Chem (4), currently taking Physics, Calc AB, English, Spanish

Like countryangel applied SCEA Yale but was deferred.

I think being borderline is a sound possibility for a 2nd interview. However, only my SAT scores would be considered borderline for Harvard.

SAT: 1960
Subject tests: 690/680/650
***Standardized tests are never my forte
However, National Hispanic Recognition Scholar (kind of like National Merit Scholar)

Rank: 1/170
GPA: 99/100 = 4.0

Great first interview: the two alums told me directly that they were impressed
Great Recommendations and Essays
School involvement and a number of leadership positions
Community service, etc

I've been told the only thing that might hold me back for my colleges is the standardized test.

I've been accepted to Boston College EA.

My 2nd interview went well. It felt longer than the first, and the interviewer was really specific with his questions and tried to play devil's advocate when I discussed my opinion on certain controversial and worldly topics.

Oh yea..and in total I'll be graduating with 3 APs, but that's the most I could take at my school without schedule conflicts with other courses. I told my interviewer this, and when schools send transcripts, they attach how rigorous our courseload is anyway

Just thought I would provide a quick update. Despite the NE snowstorm, D and I trekked into Cambridge so she could have the interview.

Basically, they could not have been nicer. I was a very positive visit to campus (our third time there) and the interview appeared to go well. No trick questions.

We did also eat in Annenberg Hall (freshman dining) after. It was nice to finally get to check it out.

Hey, i received a notice for a second interview from Columbia... Has anyone else received a notice?
