So I had an interview with Harvard in mid-December. Now they're asking me to come for a second interview. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

It seems they’re taking a close look at you, so that’s a good thing even though most accepted students only get one interview. If they had no interest in you, they wouldn’t bother arranging a second interview.

from what I have heard, it is usually a good thing.
it absolutely can’t be a bad thing.

they wanna know more about you. thats all. it means so far you haven’t been thrown in the rejected pile. good luck

It’s a pretty good thing. My son enjoyed his second interview in Cambridge (we live within and hour of Harvard)-went well-he got wait listed-but was one of first called off the wait list and he is a very happy Harvard student.

Ignore the phrase “that’s all” from post #4. A request for a second interview is a great development. They are still interested in you. Best of luck in your second interview.

HAHAHAHAHA you really have a thing for me now don’t you. i’m not gonna drag your issues with me into this. at any rate, i said thats all because it means that they just want more information from the applicant. then i said based on the fact that the request for a second interview came so late in the process means that they are still considering him. but that doesn gurantee anything. this late in the process, the committee is still looking at 5000-6000 applications. so you never know. my intentions are not to discourage anyone. otherwise i would not go through the trouble of explaining everything. i might not be super encouraging but thats only because i don’t want to raise anyones hopes. finally, it is obvious that you are questioning the fact that i am harvard student. well first i am a freshman not a sopohomore. i took a gap year before i enrolled. finally if you want to question my place at harvard, send a note along to the moderator and i shall prove it to him. i just dont want to reveal my actual identity here.

I only have a thing about needlessly discouraging potential applicants. They already know there are no guarantees, that is why they are here seeking encouragement. A second interview is an encouraging sign.

The assigning of a second interview seems to imply that interviews are not as useless as they are made out to be by most people.

To the OP, is your second interview with an alumnus or an admission officer? That would make a big difference I guess. Also, can you think of any reason they might have wanted a second interview? Your first interviewer might have not provided the info that is usually provided, the interview might not have went well etc.

I also got a second interview, I met with an alumnus last week. I’m assuming I’m probably a borderline applicant or that my first interview was too informal and thus they didn’t get enough info. But I really have no idea. At least it means I wasn’t in the reject pile as of then though :)
