In an article entitle "Top 10 priciest colleges and the cheapest" on MSN Moneycentral, Kenyon is listed as number two on the list of " Most expensive private schools"

This list is deceptive, as it is based on tuition only. If you look at the thread linked below, you will see that Kenyon's room and board is less than many other, colleges and it is actually not one of the most expensive private colleges, based on total fees.

Thanks for the link, MotherofTwo! I knew there were others out there who'd be willing to work the numbers to give us all a (slightly) better picture of some total costs for different schools.

And now I have a better answer for my husband (a big state school fan) who last night said, "look, D's school is the second on this list".

I also still like the response of the Kenyon student at parent orientation to the question about spending money - he implied he spent very little while at Kenyon. Another number that would vary per school.

I missed that, as I attended the later parent session and there were no student speakers.

The Fiske Guide actually lists Kenyon as a Best Buy.

I can attest that my D, a sophomore at Kenyon, is spending very little beyond what is already paid for while at Kenyon. The "second most expensive" title is very misleading. That is not to say that the school is cheap, but the whole package is thousands less than a lot of other schools. We went with our younger D today to a presentation about Boston University. BU's tuition is a few hundred less than Kenyon's, but comparing apples to apples BU would run about four grand more than Kenyon in required costs. And then there are those discretionary expenses that one could easily run up in Boston.
