hey, i've been wondering about this issue for a while.

i'm thinking about applying ED to Brown next fall, however I would still like to raise my GPA throughout my senior year. would i when sending in my application include the first half of my first semester? ED decisions are sent out december 15 i think and our school grades aren't given out until december 20th. is there anyway that i can tell the admissions officers of my new grades then because i believe my admissions status would be a slight reach or medium reach. one last question: if i get deferred can i still send them in my new grades?

thanks guys!

Well for ED, i don't think are going to take your Senior grades... (unless they were really considering you) Or they might just ask for it themselves. I just know for most RDs, they ask for most current grades (end of 1st semester or end of year grades)

I guess the best thing to do is to ask brown.

oh that's bad news that they don't consider them. i have a 4.65 weighted and I'm hoping to raise it up to a 4.83 and with that I'll more than likely be in the top 5%. so now i'm thinking that if i play ED and do get deferred i'll apply RD in the spring and show them that i'm "really interested"

dittogal88, how do you calc. weighted GPA?

Does your school give quarter grades?
If you are showing an upward trend, you can send quarter grades before ED decisions are made.

yes my school does give out quarter grades and i'm just wondering if say (i'm taking 3 AP's the first quarter) and i get a 5.666 during my first quarter if that would be added on to my total GPA and give it another boost.

so here's the calculation:

4.65 weighted (GPA after Junior year)

+

5.333 (tentative GPA after first quarter of senior year)

= 4.823

is this possible?

wowser, sorry i forgot to reply. anyway basically it's the same thing as unweighted but you replace 5's and 6's for 4's depending on whether you take AP or honors classes.

ok, let's say you take 5 classes your first semester and you take 2 AP's, 2 honors and one level course.

you get an A in an AP class (6)

you get a B in the other AP class (5)

you get an A in your level class (4)

you get an A in your first honors (5)

you get a B in your other honors class (4)

so then you take 6+5+4+5+4 which equals 24.

divide that by 5(the number of classes you take) and that's a 4.8...good job! lol

and if your school does the whole two grades per semester thing (4 quarters) then in this case you would have 10 grades and divide those by 10 classes.
