Hi. I want to preface by saying that I’ve visited Smith many times and really love it. I can’t see myself going anywhere else and being as happy as I would be at Smith. With that said, I’ve recently been having doubts about ED. They’re hard to articulate, but are a combination of nerves, doubts, and fears. What if I don’t end up liking it? What if I’m not meant to go there? What if they don’t offer me enough aid?
I’ve known since I first stepped onto the campus that Smith is where I want to be and where I belong, but the weight of the approaching deadline is making me nervous.
I’d love some advice and some words of wisdom, particularly from Smithies or parents of Smithies. Thanks:)
I just applied ED to Holy Cross. It didn’t scare me too much as I was fairly sure, but I don’t think you can ever be 1000% when there is thousands of great schools. I don’t go to smith obviously so can’t help there. Maybe try on the decision for size. Like act like you applied ED to smith for a few days and see how the choice feels. If they don’t offer you enough aid, for what your family decides, you have the right to not accept the ED admission. Overall if you are really unsure don’t do it. Apply to a few great schools and I’m sure you will be fine. Your chances of getting into smith will obviously be less, but you can still get in and have a chance elsewhere as well.
I love what you said about not being able to be 1000% sure when there are so many colleges. That’s actually a really great way of looking at things. Thanks:)
(Good luck with Holy Cross!! It’s a fantastic school!)
Also, I’m sure you know this but the ED acceptance rate to smith is like 57%. That is a huge jump from 32% RD
Yep! That’s definitely something I’ve thought about! Thanks haha
Current Smithie here. Not sure if this is too late or not.
I think many people have doubts about where they apply. @medrunner1998 answered the fin aid question well so I’ll focus on the other 2 parts.
If you’re having doubts I’d recommend creating a pro/con chart of applying to Smith ED, so you can remind yourself of why you love Smith and hash out exactly what is still holding you back. That helped me decide which school to enroll at. Everyone tells you to use your gut but I think that’s BS because guts can be quite unreliable when it comes to big decisions, telling me one thing one week and something else the other.
I did not apply to Smith ED - I applied to another school, was deferred, and ultimately rejected. But although I had visited and really liked that school I wasn’t totally sure about applying there until like 2 weeks before.
I had a lot of doubts about applying to Smith, even RD. Smith just wasn’t what I had envisioned my college experience to look like. When April rolled around I almost committed to another school.
But now I absolutely love it here and think I made the right decision. (I’m outlining what I love about Smith here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/smith-college/1920397-ask-a-smithie.html)
Also on an unrelated note I love Hamilton and “Dear Theodosia” too. You’ll find a lot of Hamilfans here
