Second thoughts About School Choice :(

I got accepted to a host of schools and I decided to go to RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). I went to the Accepted Students Day and I was almost certain that I wanted to go to that school. I told my mom that I am sure I wanted to go to the school and she paid the $500 non-refundable deposit. I sit down today and feel like I made a big mistake. You may feel that it is dumb but I was on Facebook and there are schools that have "Class of 2015" pages. I look at RPI's page and I see only 154 students like it and no students posting anything. I look at other schools and I see students posting every hour and socializing with each other. I do not want to go into school thinking about transferring, but I feel down because it looks like my school is dead!

I don’t know too much about RPI, but I wouldn’t judge the liveliness of a college on the activity of its facebook group.

RPI is a great school. Facebook means nothing. I am sure students there are lively. Maybe they simply don’t waste as much time on Facebook. They actually study.

Go with your gut feel. Where else can you go?

I can’t really go anywhere else because my mom would be mad if I wasted $500 but I agree with the other comments. I knew it sounded dumb to judge based on Facebook but I felt like venting my honest thoughts about it. I am hoping there are students like me who are excited to be going to this school. It would be bad to be surrounded by boring people. I am crossing my fingers that it won’t be the case.

facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_116048358463501

^ Is this the group you’re referring to? There are tons of students posting!

Well… would you rather have an online social scene or a real social scene? If everyone is glued to their computer, then that’s not the greatest of signs.

I wasn’t referring to that one. I didn’t even know of its existence until a few minutes ago. I was happy when I found out about it because I was feeling doomed before. I agree the fact that it is better to have a real social scene rather than only an online one.

Yeah, look for the right FB group xD. RPI’s a great school; good job and getting in and have fun! :)

Hahaha. Thank you Rny2! I’ll definitely lighten up about everything and have fun. :D

I was wondering what you decided :)

You are going to do just fine hugs

Thanks susgeek! hugs back I am thankful for your support throughout this process.

It’s human nature to have “buyer’s remorse” about a big decision. Some people have a harder time with questioning their decisions than others. Just accept that it’s natural to have cold feet about college, and don’t assume it means you made the wrong choice!

Also, don’t give up if you have a bad first semester. It happens to tons of freshman and often works out in the end when the student finds and settles in with a group of friends. Sometimes, you just have bad luck with the roommate draw or living situation, but it can usually be resolved. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a super smooth transition into college life.

glad to find that you found an active FB page.

However, for others…some FB pages for future frosh may not be that active yet because kids are still deciding.
