I'm getting ready to go into my 2nd year at UVA and I want to try to knockout the second writing requirement this year. But I'm not sure what classes fulfill it. I usually use Lou's list for classes and I know they have a list on there of the classes that can fulfill the second writing requirement, but are those the only classes that do or are there other classes as well that are not listed?
Such as I'm interested in the Intro to Fiction Writing class but it isn't listed on Lou's list as fulfilling the requirement, so does that mean it doesn't? Or is just not counted on Lou's list for some reason?

There are a bunch of classes that fulfill the requirement even though they are not listed on lou’s list as doing so. The ones listed on Lou’s list are ones where if you sign up there is no extra paperwork necessary. If there is a class you think that can fulfill the requirement and is not listed on lou’s list you must fill out a second writing requirement petition form. To do this you must pick up the form in monroe and make sure that…

The student to teacher raito is 30:1 (TAs can count as teachers)

Must have 20 pages of writing (does not include tests and quizzes)

Must have revisions to some of the work through the course.

The second writing requirement courses need to assign 20 pages or more of EXPOSITORY prose. Intro to Fiction won’t fulfill the requirement because it’s a creative writing course.

Most majors have one you end up taking anyways. For instance, my 500 level math class History of Math fulfills it (though the prof did have to fill out that form to get it to count).

Did you like the History of Math Class? I am hoping to take it. I am a transfer student for Math Education. What were the papers like, were they enjoyable to research for and write? I am transferring in as a third year, I AM worried about when the class will be offered again because I hear it’s not often and I think I have to have my second writing requirement done by the end of my second semester, which is the equivalent to a non-transfer’s sixth semester.

You have until your very last semester to get it done.
The class was taught once a year but the prof is doing some other work for 4 years which is why it is not being offered a lot now (she was my advisor).
Under her I loved the class but she is my advisor so I am a bit biased. The tests were hard (a lot of history memorization), but the paper was great (pick any topic you want and write 20 pages of mathy history blend writing).
I have my paper if you want to see what an A end product looks like.

That would be great. Do your remember other parameters of the paper? I am not the strongest writer. I think nearly all my brain matter fell on the math/science side of the fence. I have been thinking about starting my search for paper topics and sources early.

Ok I’m for sure not the one to be pointing this out, but come on - wrighting?

^Didn’t you know? We have to take at least one class on the First Flight

20 pages. Historical context. Go through some proofs. Conclusion. Like I said PM me I will send you mine so you can see an (A) example.
