Second Year Housing Question - MAY BE CONTROVERSIAL

Hello! I want to say before I start that my question will have to do with a controversial issue with housing. I am basically screwing someone else over in order to continue living where I am now. I am aware of this fact that and I completely understand if you don't want to help!

Basically over first-second year summer my suitemate for first year was accepted as a transfer into an Ivy and decided to go. I applied last year with a group of 4 (including me) who all knew each other really well to live together this year and we were assigned into one of the second year residences. The 3 of us who remained at UVA were given very little notice beforehand of this and basically I ended up with a double room to myself.

The problem with this was that I knew that at some point housing would assign someone else to live with me. However my suitemate from first year and I both made an agreement last year that more or less I would keep the room to myself for this year (don't ask me why it is quite complicated and we are both a little bit odd). With my suitemate leaving, I received a note roughly 2 weeks into the year when housing performs their waitlist assignment that essentially said 'Hi! My name is X and I will be moving into your apartment tonight/tomorrow'. My problem with this was that we were given zero notification of this and I certainly freaked out. What resulted was that I called X immediately and over the course of a 3-4 hour conversion managed to convince X to move elsewhere.

After this incident I convinced an additional two individuals to move elsewhere. In the meantime I discovered that housing offers a single occupancy option for a single person living in a double room. While I am expecting this e-mail to come shortly I am still very curious about two specific things in the near-future:

I have gathered that housing assignments are again complicated when those from the fall study abroad session return. My question is two-fold. One, do those who are returning from the fall session ALREADY have assignments or are openings expected to come from those who are LEAVING for the SPRING study abroad session? Two, while the # of study abroad students is sure to vary from year to year are the sessions normally about equal in terms of # of students who leave/return?

Has anyone done the single occupancy room option? How much is the special rate on top of the normal rent for the apartment?

Thanks a ton for the info!

Generally if you are not placed by spring you will be then. I’m not sure how much housing allows the option considering they have tried to give you 3 roommates already. This happened in Brown a fair bit and everyone had roommates by spring.

You should call housing and ask them about the cost of the single occupancy room.

You should probably also get over yourself and just accept the fact that you have to share a room. Help your fellow students out.

Ditto to what @Knights09 said… and I also hope you were completely honest, open and forthright about your reasons for “convincing” three students to live elsewhere.
