Second Year Housing

Hey guys! I'm currently a first year with some questions about housing. Since I can't find anything more recent than last year about second year housing (and UVA has just started the spiel about applying to housing next year), I was wondering about your guys' thoughts on it.

I want to live on-grounds but not in any residential colleges. My roommate and I work VERY well together, but I'm pretty sure she's trying to room with some other people who I don't know. So right now, I don't have a roommate. However, I just wanted to hear about the apartments OTHER than Bice or Lambeth. How are Weedon, Malone, and Johnson? Faulkner? Copeley? I know all of these are far away, but I was wondering about the actual condition of living in these places (like inside the apartments). Also, how is living in Lambeth and Bice themselves? Crappy? Nice? Okay?

If anyone else applied by themselves (with no roommates) for second-year housing, can you give me some insight into how well that worked for you? Thanks for reading the post! Please reply!

Copley is the greatest distance from other undergrad students and classes. It was intended for grad students.

Hereford has mostly singles. They are pretty tiny and the hike up the hill is not great but it would allow you to live in a single on grounds so you pay the price you pay.

Faulkner and Copeley are nice/roomy inside but all doubles/suites. I think they were actually intended to be family housing. But they really are bigger. I had friends who lived there who liked it and others who couldn’t stand it because the ride out there was just too long.

Bice and Lambeth are both really nice, Lambeth is recently renovated. They both have kitchens with your suite. It’s more of a party atmosphere.

Are you sure you don’t want to live in a res college? IRC and Brown are both closer and have better amenities.

Yeah, residential colleges just don’t suit me that well. I feel like I wouldn’t fit in - Brown is too artistic and eccentric (in a good way, of course! Just not exactly me), and I don’t know really enough about IRC to make a decision.

This thread is proving to be really helpful!

^I agree, this is really helpful and am sending it to my S. He is applying to Brown, but if that doesn’t work out then it’s one of the above options. Anyone know the odds of getting into Brown as a second year? He’s artsy and a good writer, but I don’t want him to get his hopes up. He will need a good solid “plan B”.

It helps to get an upperclassman perspective on all of these dorms! thx

It is about 50% if you stay on the waitlist through the summer, but this was before the massive influx of students and on-grounds housing becoming limited thanks to our new president/Housing. It’s much lower for initial acceptance (maybe 1/6?). You can search for a bunch of old threads about Brown admissions which are still relevant.

Thanks, Hazel! Okay, good to know that the waitlist can move a bit. I had a feeling he might have blown his chances by not applying as a first-year to Brown…but he’s still going to give it a shot for sec.-yr.

Possible “plan B” --does anyone have any experience with Shea House? My S is taking Japanese and becoming very involved with the class/students. Already talking about wanting to go abroad for a semester to Waseda U. (not sure when though…saving :)).

Plan C…Lambeth or Bice. Any info. on Malone or Weedon?

Shea house is more competitive than Brown. (specialized may be a better word than competitive). I had a number of friends live there (all Japanese majors) and they loved it though.

Lambeth/Bice are great, a little party heavy but nothing bad.

Hereford singles are far away and small. You don’t want to live there. Although if there is a push to stay on grounds it is better than copeley/etc.

Good luck!

Greetings from Copeley!!! AHA!!! I’m going to be as objective as possible.

I currently live in Copeley. There are two rooms with two people living in each room. Yes, it is far. It’s right by Barracks. It takes 20 minutes to get to Central Grounds from here. However, if you ever need to go grocery shopping, you can walk to Harris Teeter or Kroger in 7-15 minutes. Lastly, Copeley is very spacious.

^being close to Harris-Teeter and Chipotle would be a big perk :). Also, the space sounds great.
