I recently got accepted into UVa as a sophomore transfer. I wanted some input from the cc community on housing options for transfers. Some friends who attend Uva suggested that I look into Lambeth or Bice. If it matters, I will be majoring in econ and might apply to McIntire. I am looking for a place that's close to grounds, sociable, and spacious. I just want a place where I can meet people and live comfortably in.

Lambeth/Bice are definitely the best on grounds options, however it is unlikely that there is open space at this point. There might be space in some of the other dorms farther away or you could live off grounds. Just search this forum and you’ll find at least 10 threads on transfer housing saying the same thing in more detail.

If you go onto the UVa student facebook pages (such as Official University of Virginia Class of 2015) you will find students looking for an extra roommate for next year. In some cases, I think they are offering a space in on-grounds housing, if one of the their roommates has switched plans.

My daughter lives in Lambeth right now. It’s convenient to the school, the Corner, and JPJ, although the apartments are in need of some renovation and the kitchen is beyond tiny. She had the same girl enroll and drop out for both semesters (really, it was insane), and the girl got into the apartment both times. So there might be hope for you to be put into an apartment with just a single space. For meeting other students and being close, Lambeth is pretty perfect. I don’t know anything about Bice – when I was there, he was my professor, not housing! :)

Almost all of Lambeth apartments have been renovated with new appliances, etc. If you get into a 4 person apt. instead of a 6 person apt, it is a little more roomy per student.

Wahoo81 - Bice used to be called the Nursing Student Dorm

I lived in Lambeth second year as a transfer and it was a great way to meet people, both roommates and beyond. I suggest looking on student forums or Facebook to see if anyone is trying to give up their spot. Around this time and early summer is a great time to look because current students know that transfers are receiving decisions. I got my spot by going this route and worked out great, and I had numerous friends at the end of the second year try to get out of their spots for third year and easily gave them away.

Shoe, where can I look for people trying to give up their spots? I haven’t applied for housing yet (application available on May 1st) so should I wait to see if I can get lambeth through uva housing or should I be on the lookout for students wanting to get rid of their spots? Suppose I do find someone willing to give me their spot in lambeth. How do I go about letting housing know that I will be taking someone’s spot?

I’m not sure what the big forums these days are. Watch the transfer facebook page, the mailing list, and student forums. Do a Google for “off-grounds housing”, that’s a forum that may or may not still be active.

I say apply through the office to get your name on a list. Then try to actively find something on the above sites. Once you find someone to switch with, you both have to notify the office and you pay the $100 app fee, then they switch. The one thing you need to watch out for is I’m not sure if you can still do this if you accept a housing offer. So just double check that

Grand Marc on the Corner may still have some openings as well. It’s very conveniently located, and the apartments are furnished; however, it’s also probably the most expensive complex. (They just wall-mounted 52" plasmas in each apartment!)

I have a lease for on-grounds housing in Faulkner available if you are a female! email me if interested dac7wh@virginia.edu
