…If you have any lemme know and I’ll try to help…if not…carry on.

what made you choose uci?

Liked the campus, liked the school, liked that they were giving me a scholarship.

yackityyack:
what do u do on your freetime/weekend?
do u have a job?
how is the social life?
what major are u in?
how many hours a day do u study?
are study groups common?
is studying done mostly in the library?
how active are the clubs on-campus?
do u recommend any good professors for freshmen year courses?

thanks!

what do u do on your freetime/weekend?

--I sleep, go to church, spend time with friends at their apartments etc., go to movies, go to the ARC, go to the beach, gone clubbing a few times, go to UCI basketball/baseball games, any other random shinanigans, etc.

do u have a job?

--No, but I need to get one ><

how is the social life?

--Irvine isn't the most hoppin place but it has everything that you'll need IMO. In the dorms a lot of people go home on the weekend but there are still always people around. Theres a decent amount of Norcal people (like myself) there too. You should always be able to find things to do. I am rarely bored.

what major are u in?

--Polisci

how many hours a day do u study?

--Depends on when midterms/finals/papers are due but usually a few to several hours a night

are study groups common?

--Yes, particularly for general ed type classes. For instance, before humcore finals, other people from my hall and around would have a group study. It was very convenient.

is studying done mostly in the library?

--People do study in the two main libraries but there also is the Gateway Commons study center and every hall will have at least one closed off study room (some have more depending on size of the hall).

how active are the clubs on-campus?

--There are a ton of clubs on campus and people in general are pretty active, although it depends on the person and the effort you put in.

do u recommend any good professors for freshmen year courses?

--I can't make any specific recommendations for profs of first year courses because it's hard to know who's going to be teaching what in a year from now and what classes you actually end up taking.

Did you apply to UCI this year?

Yackityyack: Thank you for your reply!

I did apply to UCI and if I am admitted I will probably go there. I live in Newport Beach and would live off-campus if I get in which kind of sucks because I wont get the roommate/dormroom experience. You mentioned the social life you experience at UCI, but would it still be possible to do all those things if I am an engineering major? Are sport games free to watch if you're a UCI student? I am going on a lengthly trip this summer and might miss Orientation Week/Day. Is that bad? Thanks again!

I would recommend if you can to go to SPOP during the summer but if like you say you'll be on a lengthy trip that might not be possible. I think as long as you get your academic advising done you should still be ok with the university but check that stuff when the time comes.

As an engineering major you'll probably spend more time doing school work but you can still have some fun. The most important thing is time management. UCI sports events are free for all students.

are u a guy or a girl?

whats the policy on drinking? like what happens if u get caught drinking underage? and are parties common? or do u have to be part of a fraternity? btw i am a guy.

I'm a guy. Drinking isn't allowed in the dorms, unless you are over 21, but no one is. If you get caught by the RAs you'll get written up just like any college. After several write ups you get kicked out..but it depends on the offense etc., pretty typical policy. People of course drink in the dorms anyway...pretty common although it depends on your hall. Fraternities throw parties all the time, there is no frat row, so most of the parties take place at clubs and such. Other than that, people of course throw parties in their apartments and stuff. If partying is your thing..you can find it here, but it's not going to jump out at you in the same way as it would at UCSB where they party non-stop.

thanks. i am not too much of a partier but i just want to get the college experience. how are the girls? what were your stats when u got admitted? what are the benefits of being in the honors program? is it hard to get in to that program?

The girls are overall pretty good looking. Of course the school is half Asian...so if you like Asian girls that's good. I'm white but am not one to discriminate either way ;) haha. It'll be harder to get that "college experience" living at home. You'll just have to get involved. I know of some people who commuted but made friends in the dorms and just hung out there all the time so they had a lot of friends on campus. You can make it work but it's probably not going to be as easy as it would if you were living in the dorms.

My stats:

4 point something
back with the old SATs/SAT2s: 1350,750,710,660...i think that's right.
Granted I'm a polisci major in the school of social sciences which is less competitive than Engineering for instance.

Benefits of the Campuswide Honors Program (CHP): guaranteed --on-campus housing for 4 years (if you want it..prolly wouldn't matter in your case)
--early timeslot for picking class--we register before everyone else so even your freshmen year..you register before all athletes and seniors etc.
--getting another connection on campus--CHP people hang out and many live together in the honors halls or just make friendships through that
--Several honors classes with just CHP people (some people might think that's a benefit..idunno...but that's how it works)

Those are the main ones...www.honors.uci.edu.. you wanna check out the website.

It's competitive to get into the CHP..I feel lucky that I did. The CHP makes up about 3% of UCI students.
