I was recently admitted as a second year transfer and I have some questions about blending into the social life here. I transferred from another four-year, so I remember the whole freshman experience with meeting people and I know I'm going to be way behind as a transfer who still wants to meet people.

I'm hoping to live on-campus, but I know that by now most of the on-campus dorms must be filling up. Are there any dorms that you would recommend for non-Freshman trying to meet people? Do you think it will be hard to meet people because I'm a transfer?

If I decided to join a fraternity, but didn't want to live at the house, how intense of a time commitment would it be? My sister was in a sorority and enjoyed it without living there so I may be interested in that if I can still get in it.

I'm more concerned with how it will be meeting people as a sophomore, so if anyone has any insight/ advice on that, it would really help.

Bitte,
Welcome to the Trojan family. A good way to meet people is to join some interest group. There are about 600 of them. Religious organizations have dinners and all sorts of social events. Another suggestion would be to do community service with one of the SC based clubs. Volunteer with an environmental organization. Help out backstage in one of the student managed productions. If you are musical, add your talent to one of the choirs or ensembles which are associated with the music school for non majors.

Do you play a sport? Look into the club/intramural sports. Check out the Facebook groups.

Find other transfers who are in the same situation. They are all hoping to make new friends.

Hey,
I’m in the same situation so I know how you’re feeling. From what everyone’s been saying, just join a lot of clubs and see what suits you.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely think it will be easy for me to start becoming active in groups because I was pretty active at my last school.

I would like to know if anyone could recommend sophomore rooming? I’m applying for housing now and hoping to get a spot, but are there any places that stand out as a good place for a sophomore transfer to meet other sophomores? I would like to live somewhere not too secluded from the social scene, but not too crazy.

i’ve heard troy hall is good.
