I know this is still a couple months away, but what is the general procedure for completing the secondary applications for medical schools.

I'll be submitting the AMCAS application in early June (within the first week), and I will have just taken my MCAT at the end of May, so I'll get my scores back by early July. However, I will be out of the country, with no computer/internet/phone access for about two weeks from mid-late June.

I guess my few concerns are when schools actually begin sending out secondaries, if schools will send secondaries prior to having my MCAT scores and my application verified, and what to do if I get sent a secondary and am not able to submit it within 2 weeks.

I am not sure, if you are even complete on the primary without MCAT scores. The 2014 application instructions are up at AMCAS. Got to read up on that… AMCAS won’t transmit your app until it is verified - I know that for sure. From what I gather, some schools almost immediately (after receiving your primary from AMCAS) send you an e-mail with a link to their online secondary.

I browsed through the instructions quickly. It looks like AMCAS would transmit even without MCAT scores! Well, as I mentioned, many schools send secondary applications automatically. They love your $100 in fee way too much:)

You should probably have a trusted family member check your email, perhaps set up a gmail account for this purpose.

In general a quick turnaround time is ideal, 48 hours to two weeks seems to be the recommended amount. My DD was out of the country and I had to check some things for her and also the items which had to be snail mailed, she would email to me to print and mail along with the required photo.

You can do some prep work now so that if you get back from abroad and discover several secondaries waiting, you can be quick in response.

Check SDN and prepare answers to the secondary questions, or at least rough drafts which allow you to turn around the secondary sooner. Find out if schools require a printed photo or an online one, have that ready in whichever format is now required.
