Sorry for being rude, I wasn't feeling so well b/c I had a little too much to drink last night.

^^^
LoL, see what alcohol does to you children?

Sorry Yargg, just had to go there.

On another note, the entire ambiguity surrounding secret society is with their rituals, initiation, and mistified conspiracies of torture, hazing, etc. (Crazy things get spread around like acclaimed bondage during intiation into Georgie's Order of Greek Horsemen).

All that stuff has me scared at what it take to be intiated that I would never take up the offer if given, I don't care how many prsidents went through these groups.

I've already started a secret society at my high school with some of my friends. We don't really do anything of any importance, just sit around and talk ad read poetry, mostly. We based ourselves off of the Dead Poets' Society, if you couldn't tell (if you haven't seen the movie, stop reading this post and get it!) I think I might even list it as one of my extracurricular activites!!

Alot of the college secret societies exist to raise $$ in some way - or to give back to the school in some way.

Brown's "secret society" is so secret, they have their own website. I don't know what they actually do though.

Look for schools with big Greek systems, and then watch the pavement outside the houses for chalked '7's and 'Z's and eyes, and then you will know that secret societies exist there. Assume nearly all colleges in the USNWR top 50 have a secret society of some sort, because they pretty much all do. Most are benign, although I have seen a few adults with penny sized brands in inconspicous places, so keep some ice handy when the gentlemen in hoods show up at your dorm one icy January night to invite you out in the inclement weather, for tea in the company of the righteous and true.

Sure, they may brand you, but generally speaking, they may also throw the best formals, and help you network your way to a good job after graduation, so it all works out in the end. I once knew a man who faked being in one ( he left the room whenever it was mentioned, which is a tradition of its membership) and ended up making some great work connections with the other men who had left the room!

UVA. ^ has both the 7s and Zs, actually i think a lot of colleges have secret societies.

why 7s, Zs, and eyes?

I read that at Cornell, either the sphinxhead or quills (I forget the full name), the newspaper editor in chief is always tapped.

david218 - wait and find out! Or...read below :)

7s, Zs, and 'eyes' are often chalked outside of greek houses when a member of that house is tapped (invited) to join - these are 3 distinct societies, so one house may have all three, others none. It is considered a mark of prestige to have one or all of these chalked outside of your house. Other secret college societies sometimes consider these groups, and others like them, only semi-secret, because they give clues of their existence away, via chalking. Some secret societies use code phrases to identify themselves in conversation, some wear signatories, like small pins with no greek insignia and usually give very vague answers when questioned as to what it is. Some societies give nothing away, and the vast majority of people will never know they exist, and these are usually the ones that have some power consolidation to them - a history of excellent networking connections, a lifetime commitment, etc.

If you are hoping to be tapped for one, the best thing you can do, other than be a campus leader, is never get caught saying anything negative about anyone, ever - you never know if that girl you make an offhand funny remark about is the Grand High Inquistor of the Mystic 7, or the TurtleQueen, or the girlfriend of the Doge.

l o l

h a

haha were all obviously dreaming of joining one...such elitists arent we

Here's a thread that gives details about UVA's many secret societies.
