What is the deal with UVA having the Z and IMP symbols painted on every conceivable surface in this school? Apparently these are secret society symbols - why does UVA allow this? I know they give a lot of money to the school - but this happens at every major university and I have never seen such a blatant display of garishness anywhere else.

i think secret societies are sweet

No problem with secret societies in and of themselves - don't really know anything about them to judge. I just found the painted symbols everywhere to be unattractive.

They really don't give that much money (with the exception of The Seven Society). The Z's and the IMP's are student secret societies.

I like the secret societies. It gives UVA a little bit of mystery and the painted symbols are just another way the university stands out compared to other schools.

are they super secret like the skull and bones? where you are guarenteed success?

amnesia, from what I've heard, the secret societies have successful alumni, but the alumni would have been successful anyway. The people who are tapped are, supposedly, the megalegacies, the ultrarich, and the uber-connected of the student body, and it's always been that way. If you're old, old, old money, with several generations of UVA in you, and your family regularly dines with members of UVA's board of trustees...yea, you might have a shot.

I'm not going to UVA, but i am a freemason, and secret societies are sweet

Freemasons are semi-secret. Sorry.

still know a hell of alot more about it than u do

I don't care. If it were truly secret you wouldn't be telling people about it on a random internet message board...nor would you feel the need to do so. Sorry.
