Secret to admission?

Good luck to your daughter!

So perhaps that is it. Georgetown takes only #1-3

You know that isn’t true.

Yeah, I know. There is no magical equation.

As my dd waits for her EA Gtown decision she is worried. She is a great student-straight A’s in all AP and Honors classes at a very competitive HS. She has many academic and athletic awards, National Merit Commended student, great EC’s,etc. but still thinks she’ll be deferred. A good friend that went to her hs is a Gtown freshman now and had equal stats and still was deferred but accepted RD. Who knows?? She loves the school and is hoping to hear within the week. It’s so hard to say with these schools. The valedictorian in the class last spring had a Mom who graduated from Yale, yet when she applied she wasn’t accepted. She goes to UPenn and loves it there though.

I agree. D’s financial aid package from Georgetown was amazing also.

“Ouch, your response seems to be quite defensive.”

My response was an attempt to shift the conversation to a more constructive level than “because I said so”. The only thing I was defending was my own stated thesis.

At least you attempted to address the quotations I provided somewhat rationally, but with ‘Just take my word for it that Georgetown doesn’t care where it is on someone’s “list.”’ as your final argument, you returned us to the somber country of Argument From Authority (When Said Authority Has Not Even Been Demonstrated).

Since dzleprechaun has wisely invoked a higher authority than either of the two of us, I think we can sheath our toy swords and consider the matter closed.

@DreamSchlDropout Just FYI, CSIHSIS actually works in the admissions department at Georgetown as some sort of student (according to him/her, at least).

I totally forgot to post this, but Command+F “interest” and you’ll see.

Gigem86 - I wonder if my D attends the high school you’re referring to? Sounds like it. Point being, clearly there’s no way to “crack the code” on how private schools admit. One thing that is certain though – top universities (both private and public) have there “feeder” pipelines (and high schools they favor). Per your example how is that a top high school gets 15-20 kids into Ivy’s/Stanford/Cal Tech/Oxford every year (and even more get accepted) and yet ends up zero for 30 (per Naviance) at Georgetown over the past 3 years? While local religious based high schools always get a handful into Georgetown every year? Coincidence? Probably not. That said, our high school gets a large portion (maybe disproportionate) number of kids into other top schools. Our high school doesn’t provide a class ranking (other than a top 9% distinction) and the Vals and Sals aren’t announced until well after the RD’s are sent. So
?

Point being no code cracking here
but if you “feel around” your high school with kids/parents from (and check Naviance) you’ll have a better sense what top universities are simpatico with your high school. Then again, if your kid falls in love with Georgetown, even if Naviance says it’s an extreme long shot, what can you do but let your kid take their chances and apply.

Georgetown is about to transition away from GUShare to Box.com accounts, so that link will be invalid pretty soon. To capture its contents for posterity
it goes to a copy of Georgetown’s submission for the 2011-2012 Common Data Set. Under section C7, which is “Basis for Selection: Relative importance of each of the following academic and nonacademic factors in first-time, first-year, degree-seeking (freshman) admission decisions” it lists “Level of applicant’s interest” as “Not Considered.”

I’m not sure why they don’t have more recent CDSs published. I’ll shoot them a note and ask. FYI, the Georgetown Common Data Set homepage is: http://oads.georgetown.edu/facts/cds/</a></p>
