How important are the scores on individual sections of the ACT versus the composite score? I took it today and I'm pretty sure I did well, EXCEPT I finished the science section with seven questions left and had to fill in the bubbles randomly :(... if my composite score is around 30/31 but my science score is low (maybe 24-26?) how does this affect me? Thanks!

It will bring the composite score down…it’s an average of the sections. But, some colleges superscore, so if you can, take the test again and really focus on scoring higher on science.
Not to hijack the thread, but what is with the science sections that stumps everyone? I have yet to take the ACT yet, but I’ve seen numerous practice tests and the science section is not hard. What’s the deal?

to Greens: the science section tests nothing but how well you can complete the ACT Science Section. It’s all about strategy and timing, not knowledge about subjects, although familiarity will make it more comfortable. As for me, it’s been my lowest section, bringing me down from a potential 32-33 to a 30. I usually stress out on that section.

original: it is an average. So, for every 4 points you scored lower than your average of the other three, take off a point

Also, the Science section is simply reasoning - all (or most, in the case of the Feb ACT that I took a few days ago o.O) of the information is given to you, you just have to think about it. I think that’s what trips people up.

What was hard for me about the science was how little time we had! I felt like I was doing great until I realized we had five minutes left and I was only about half-way through (my bad… I should’ve prepared ahead of time). But the main thing I’m wondering: do colleges only look at your composite score? Cause I know on the SAT if you got 2000 but 500 cr (this is hypothetical) it would look bad. Is that how it is with the ACT also? Or is it JUST your composite score? Thanks!

bump. anyone?

Most colleges take your composite. BUT it is not uncommon for schools to “weigh” - I guess you could say - your math and english sections. When I say weigh I mean they give them greater value than reading and science.

Thanks you! I hope so… cause I most definitely failed the science section :(
