For any current students (or people who know):

A lot of courses say something like lecture w/section. I’m assuming these sections are extra classes outside of the designated period. How much extra time are they, and how many times a week? Are they usually led by TAs? What if you have conflicting sections? And are they usually mandatory? Oh, and why don’t they just include sections in the regular class schedule?

I'll try and quickly answer, although I've never actually had a class with sections:

They are in addition to large lecture classes, in general, and are led by TA's. They are a way of allowing for smaller discussions, and usually several different days and times are offered to allow for scheduling needs. They tend to be an hour, once a week, and they are usually mandatory (attendance is sometimes taken, with a bearing on grade).
