Securing a Job by Graduation

Well I don't know if this belongs in the internship/employment forum or this one so I decided with this one.

Well I am a rising college freshman right now and I know its probably very early to be concerned about this but things are very tight for my family financially, extremely tight actually so its something I keep in the back of my mind.

Unless you live under a rock, you must know that the job situation for many recent college grads (and current seniors graduating) is well... eh.... sucky.

Many graduates are finding themselves unemployed or even working in an overqualified position which is just as big of an issue as being unemployed.

My question is, is this the fault of the college graduate, who slacked off throughout college and didn't use their time very wisely and got poor grades? Or are even great students, those who get As and did what they could even struggling?

This question isn't for Ivy league grads/ stanford/MIT/Duke/etc.. top school graduates..
More like for good college/ good small liberal arts college graduates.

Are there any ways that you can gaurentee to be employed by the time graduation comes around?

Eg: -Great GPA
-Great Major with Job Prospects
-Doing ECs (do they even matter at all?)

etc.

Feel free to go on a tangent or answer this question however you like, I'd like to hear your input and experiences or your child's experiences.

The key thing, in my experience, is putting in extra effort during your undergrad years.
This means participation in ECs related to your major, volunteering, internships, etc.
